Relay P&C Project Engineer
Job Description
Ampirical seeks an onsite Relay P&C Project Engineer in Covington, LA to support EPC substations (MV through EHV) with a focus on protection and control, serving as the primary interface between field construction and design teams and ensuring adherence to Ampirical designs and standards. Travel up to 10% may be required; salary is USD 92,670 per year.
Responsibilities
- Act as the main point of contact for EPC efforts during estimating, construction, and testing phases, handling questions as they arise.
- Manage relationships with alliance clients to maintain alignment and clear communication.
- Communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams to keep projects progressing smoothly.
- Respond to field and client inquiries in a timely manner to support project momentum.
- Apply thorough design and construction knowledge of utility substations (MV through EHV) with emphasis on protection and control systems including one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, station service systems (AC and DC), cable sizing/routing, instrument transformers, circuit breakers, power transformers, and autotransformers.
- Understand substation physical and electrical layouts, equipment specifications, general arrangement, grounding, and outdoor bus design.
- Review RFPs to ensure engineering estimates are complete and accurate, and when applicable, review subcontractor estimates for precision.
- Lead or support pre-construction design package review meetings with clients and subcontractors.
- Conduct project job walks and verify that engineering design packages are properly executed during construction.
- Assist in developing project proposals, bid preparations, schedules, and bill of materials for assigned projects as needed.
- Perform quality reviews of engineering work for internal assets and subcontractors when necessary.
- Analyze technical issues quickly and craft solutions that minimize schedule and budget impacts.
- Support the team in delivering quality work on time and within budget.
- Present technical topics to small groups with varying levels of experience with confidence.
- Travel to meet with clients and conduct professional meetings as required.
- Prioritize work and manage tasks across multiple projects under budget and time constraints.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited university; Electrical Engineering (BSEE) preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience with a Professional Engineer (PE) license; or 9+ years of experience without a PE.
- Proven track record in the utility industry with both design-only and EPC projects, covering all aspects of Relay Protection and Control.
- Experience managing complex engineering projects with a high degree of personal initiative.
- Ability to interact professionally with personnel, clients, and contractors.
