Security Engineer – 2027 (US)

The Security Engineer role at Amazon focuses on evaluating risk and strengthening defenses to safeguard customer data against internal and external threats. The position in Seattle, Washington (onsite) involves designing, testing, deploying, and improving security controls, protocols, and incident response practices.

Role Overview

In this position, you will build and validate security controls, defenses, and countermeasures. Work includes assessing risks affecting the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data, systems, and services, and supporting security event and incident resolution. You will also classify, store, and handle data in line with policy or best practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with experienced Amazonians to create and execute security controls, defenses, and countermeasures designed to intercept and prevent internal and/or external attacks.
• Develop, test, review, debug, or deploy code that supports security protocols.
• Work effectively with your team to identify security problems and improve the security characteristics of assigned service(s).
• Assess risks that may impact confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data, systems, or services.
• Resolve security events or incidents and conduct security assessments using penetration tests, ethical hacking tools, or risk mitigation methodologies to evaluate vulnerabilities.
• Classify, store, and handle data according to policy or best practices.
• Troubleshoot, research root causes, and resolve security or risk issues with guidance.

Required Qualifications

• Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Knowledge of one or more of the following domains: access-control system and methodology, network security, application- and system-development security, security architecture and models, cryptography, and operations security.
• Experience with coding or scripting in one or more languages (example languages: Python, C, C++, Java, Ruby, or PowerShell).
• Must be 18 years of age or older.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with AWS Services including EC2, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, and SQS.
• Experience with tools such as Wireshark, encryption software, Snort, Sguil, Suricata, Kibana, Metasploit, Nmap, OpenSSL, or Setkey.

Technologies and Tools

Work may involve Python, C, C++, Java, Ruby, PowerShell, AWS services including EC2, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, and SQS, as well as Wireshark, encryption software, Snort, Sguil, Suricata, Kibana, Metasploit, Nmap, OpenSSL, and Setkey.

Location and Compensation

• Starting Pay: USD 152,000 per year
