Senior Data and Analytics Engineer
Job Description
Velir is seeking a Senior Data & Analytics Engineer to bridge data engineering and analytics engineering, shaping data pipelines, data models, and semantic layers with Databricks at the core. Based in New York, NY, this hybrid position operates within a remote-first company that hires US-based applicants, offering a salary range of USD 160,000 to 175,000 per year and a strong benefits package.
Responsibilities
- Architect and sustain scalable data pipelines and ELT workflows with Databricks as the primary platform
- Develop and maintain well-documented, tested dbt models designed for long-term maintainability
- Own data modeling decisions and methodology, defining entities, relationships, and grain in collaboration with analytics and business stakeholders
- Proactively translate engagement objectives into concrete tasks and deliverables
- Regularly deliver improvements to clients' data infrastructure and analytical capabilities
- Operate autonomously while mentoring less-experienced engineers and providing technical guidance
- Collaborate with data engineers, analytics engineers, data analysts, and clients on end-to-end data requirements
- Partner with clients and functional managers to plan data engineering and modeling needs for product launches
- Develop processes and documentation templates to help cross-functional teams solve common data problems
- Drive data solution improvements that enhance client experience or empower internal stakeholders
- Identify and address important problems, coordinating across cross-cutting technical issues
- Architect and design data systems and transformation layers using scalable, iterative delivery patterns
- Proactively identify and address technical debt with careful consideration of development costs
- Prioritize predictability and establish a regular cadence of deliverables
- Maintain focus on reliability, maintainability, and scalability of client systems
- Identify and prioritize unowned or unglamorous work that enables the broader team to move faster
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, or hybrid/generalist role focused on designing and developing data pipelines and transformation layers
- Strong programming skills in Python and SQL
- Hands-on expertise with Databricks, including Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, and Databricks workflows
- Strong dbt capabilities for data transformation, testing, and documentation
- Experience in data modeling, including dimensional modeling, entity-relationship design, and semantic layer development
- Deep knowledge of data warehousing and ELT/ETL processes
- Familiarity with data integration and orchestration platforms such as Fivetran, Apache Airflow, or Azure Data Factory
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
- Experience with Snowflake or Motherduck is a plus
- Experience with streaming solutions like Spark Streaming or Kafka is desirable but not required
- Familiarity with MLOps techniques and platforms is a plus but not required
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Familiarity with coding assistants such as Claude Code, Copilot, or Codex is a plus
