Job Description

Senior Data Engineer role (onsite) in Alexandria, VA focused on predictive and condition-based monitoring using telematics data.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, automate, and maintain ETL data workflows from telematic systems using Microsoft Fabric Data Factory and Python
  • Organize and deploy systems to manage real-time and historical condition monitoring and telematics data
  • Diagnose and resolve workflow issues; proactively address data performance to minimize downtime and ensure data availability
  • Design and develop AI-assisted data transformations, semantic models, and Power BI reporting for operational decisions
  • Build and maintain large-scale relational databases to support ETL processes and maintain data quality and integrity
  • Lead integration of telematics data with enterprise CMMS to enable automated alerts and maintenance repair record creation
  • Develop and refine predictive maintenance strategies and thresholds
  • Analyze equipment health indicators (examples provided: vibration, temperature, pressure, fault codes) to detect abnormal trends
  • Collaborate with reliability engineers, asset engineers, maintenance teams, and IT teams to support continuous integration and operations of condition monitoring
  • Develop and monitor KPIs for asset health and condition monitoring program compliance
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and asset lifecycle performance
  • Maintain documentation, reports, and dashboards for system health and performance
  • Evaluate telematics data against established thresholds, failure modes, and reliability models
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) on failures and near-misses
  • Recommend strategies and processes to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality
  • Train peers and end users on tools developed for asset health and performance monitoring
  • Research and provide feedback on condition monitoring technologies, predictive maintenance tools, and opportunities for incorporation on existing equipment
  • Maintain and promote awareness and accountability with agency safety policies and procedures; support a positive safety culture and encourage reporting of safety concerns consistent with the Agency Safety Plan and related requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles

Requirements

  • Knowledge of how telematic systems can be leveraged to improve reliability
  • Knowledge and understanding of at least one programming language: SQL, Informatica, or Python
  • Knowledge of using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to analyze, query, and collect maintenance history
  • Strong skills manipulating large data sets using tools including Microsoft Excel, Tableau, or Power BI
  • Communication and influencing skills, including conveying technical concepts to non-experts and business leaders
  • Presenting capability for reports, findings, analysis, and recommendations to different audiences within the Authority
  • Initiative to improve business processes and internal customer service
  • Ability to translate business priorities into plans, delivery roadmaps, and measurable outcomes
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple responsibilities
  • Ability to organize and summarize large data sets into key findings
  • Ability to be available 24 hours, 7 days a week

Minimum Experience

  • 7 years of progressive experience in engineering, reliability, maintenance, data science, data analytics, and/or related technical field
  • At least 2 years of experience with ETL (extract, transform, load) processes

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Reliability, Electrical, Mechanical, or related engineering field (example given: Data Science)
  • In lieu of a bachelor’s degree: High School Diploma or GED plus 4 years experience in an electrical, mechanical maintenance role or data analytics, in addition to the experience stated below

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a reliability engineer role
  • Experience with ETL / data pipeline modernization
  • Experience with Machine Learning
  • Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or DAX
  • ASQ-CRE or CMRP certification preferred
  • Experience with mechanical/engineering systems
