Senior Distinguished AI Engineer
Job Description
Capital One’s Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team is focused on turning the company’s AI vision into production-grade capabilities that support responsible, scalable real-time experiences. In this onsite Senior Distinguished AI Engineer role in Richmond, VA, you’ll build and optimize AI software components that help power foundation AI and large language model experiences across the organization.
What you’ll do
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners including engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products that improve how associates work and how customers engage with Capital One.
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components such as foundation model training, LLM inference, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
- Apply a broad stack of AI technologies spanning open source and SaaS, including AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, PyTorch, and more.
- Develop state-of-the-art LLM optimization techniques to improve production performance, including scalability, cost, latency, and throughput.
- Help shape the technical vision and contribute to the long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or a Master’s degree in a related field plus at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies.
- At least 10 years of experience programming with Python, Go, Scala, or Java.

Salary and incentives
The salary range for this Richmond, VA role is USD 286,200 - 326,700 per year. Performance based incentive compensation may be available and could include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI), depending on the plan.

- McLean, VA: $314,800 - $359,300
- New York, NY: $343,400 - $392,000
- Richmond, VA: $286,200 - $326,700
- San Francisco, CA: $343,400 - $392,000
- San Jose, CA: $343,400 - $392,000
Candidates hired in other locations will receive the pay range associated with that location, and the annualized salary offered will be reflected in the offer letter.
