Senior Process Engineer

This senior process engineering and technical advisory role at Y12 is tasked with guiding complex, multi-disciplinary engineering efforts within the Nuclear Weapons Enterprise System. Based onsite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the position requires authoritative decision making, the development of standards and guides, and close coordination with engineering leads to advance Mission Engineering objectives.

Responsibilities

• Oversee complex, cross-disciplinary engineering issues as assigned by the Director, ensuring alignment with program objectives and safety standards.
• Make decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative and have significant impact on broad technical activities.
• Apply creativity and mature technical judgment to anticipate and resolve unprecedented problems, define program objectives and requirements, and develop engineering standards and guides for diverse activities.
• Perform work at a high level, applying advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts within the engineering domain.
• Implement company policies and contribute to the development of new policies as appropriate.
• Coordinate with other engineering leads and Design Agency partners to achieve Mission Engineering objectives.
• Share expertise for the good of the organization and support the engineering education program as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or substantially equivalent as documented by ABET; minimum 12 years of relevant work experience.
• Master of Science in Engineering or Physical Science with 10 years of relevant experience.
• Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering or Physical Science with 7 years of relevant experience.
• In addition, the candidate must meet DOE O 426.2A requirements, including pathways such as a Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major with 2 years of job-related experience and 1 year of nuclear experience, or other DOE O 426.2A alternatives. Experience under DOE 426.2A can be satisfied after employment; initially, new hires will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.
• Thorough knowledge of current Special Materials processes at Y-12 and familiarity with future processing strategies.
• Significant time spent in production environments.
• Advanced degree in engineering.
• Experience in the Nuclear Weapons Complex from a contractor, federal, or military perspective.
• Demonstrated ability to handle complex assignments with strong oral and written communication skills; willing to work in a production environment and interact with technical personnel and management.
• Capability to perform technical assignments requiring originality and independent use of engineering knowledge and experience.
