Job Description

Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP is hiring a Senior Rail and Transit Engineer to help deliver high-quality rail projects with a focus on schedule, budget, and client satisfaction. This Baltimore, MD (onsite) role offers flexible work schedule options, a competitive salary range of USD 100,000 - 180,000 per year, and a benefits package designed to support your work and life, including healthcare, 401(k), tuition reimbursement, and parental and maternity leave benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and deliver transit and rail services on-time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of the client.
  • Prepare and revise reports, specifications, plans, schedules, environmental studies, and engineering designs for rail projects.
  • Act as a technical resource and lead a team providing rail track engineering and design services.
  • Develop cost estimates, define scope of work, and support preparation of proposals and contracts.
  • Coordinate and ensure design effort is complete and accurate.
  • Use design software to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Submit documents to federal, state, and local agencies for review and obtain required permits.
  • Support Design/Build efforts, including input on design constructability based on field conditions, sequencing, and construction scheduling.
  • Attend onsite and offsite client meetings, serving as a technical liaison and coordinating technical work within discipline areas.
  • Evaluate when design changes are needed and provide recommendations.
  • Participate in project scoping and fee estimating, including proposal preparation, interviews, and negotiations.
  • After award, define project scope, set work procedures and sequences, and develop schedules and budgets.
  • Provide discipline-specific planning and work distribution to support continuity of purpose through start-up to project closeout.
  • Perform design calculations, conduct investigative analyses, and direct preparation of design specifications.
  • Organize task scheduling and assignments while applying senior-level expertise to consider a broad range of engineering solutions.
  • Lead planning and ensure adherence to the project schedule and budget on complex or unusual projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 16+ years of track design experience.
  • Professional Engineer, P.E. in Maryland; DC and Virginia PE’s are a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of rail track design, management, and implementation for transit/passenger/freight rail projects.
  • Familiarity with agencies including MDOT MTA, MDOT SHA, MDTA, and others such as the City of Baltimore DOT (a plus).
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and techniques, including AREMA guidelines.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microstation V8i, Inroads, and Open Rail.
  • Skill with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented.
