Senior Substation Engineer

The Senior Substation Engineer provides oversight for substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the United States. The role includes development of protection and control and/or physical layout design deliverables for distribution and transmission projects, along with coordination, quality review, and targeted field support.

Location and Salary

• Location: Chicago, IL (onsite)
• Salary range: USD $100,609.60 - USD $125,689.60 per year

Key Responsibilities

• Develop conceptual designs and execution plans for substation projects.
• Prepare engineering and project cost estimates, along with schedules.
• Deliver physical substation design scope, including yard layouts, plans, sections, and detailed design for grounding and lightning protection.
• Support control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and related bills of material.
• Create protection and control design deliverables, including panel arrangements, one-lines/single lines, three-lines, AC schematics, DC elementaries, and equipment and relay panel wiring.
• Perform calculations used in studies and reports, such as grounding, lightning protection, and AC/DC load studies.
• Develop equipment specifications to support procurement and/or factory acceptance testing.
• Lead coordination of design activities with internal departments, including Civil/Structural, Networks, and Transmission Line teams.
• Develop and improve processes, tools, and/or technology implementations.
• Meet and correspond regularly with clients or outside personnel.
• Conduct quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
• Provide short term field support during construction.
• Support business development and marketing initiatives.
• Participate in additional technical areas as applicable, including relay settings, 3D modeling/design, or service on industry and professional technical committees.

Required Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
• Experience: Minimum 5 years of related experience. Completion of a master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of experience.
• Professional credentials: Professional Engineer registration strongly preferred.
• Standards knowledge: Proficiency with the National Electrical Safety Code and IEEE / ANSI Standard.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Technical strength: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to solve difficult problems by adapting and modifying standard approaches, techniques, procedures, and criteria.
