Sr. Data Engineer - CX Analytics
Job Description
Unum Group is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to support its CX Analytics organization by creating and evolving data solutions that power BI/reporting and advanced analytics. In this hybrid role based in Portland, ME, you will design end-to-end data domains and pipelines, including AI-enabled workflows and LLM-based approaches that help extract signal from sources such as raw text.
Working closely with data scientists and business partners, you will translate analytics goals into the right data structures, while ensuring scalability, performance, and maintainability across the enterprise data architecture. You will also play a lead role in automation and provide mentorship to lower-level data engineers.
What you’ll do
- Lead the development, construction, testing, and maintenance of complex data pipelines using a variety of languages and tools to meet business requirements.
- Integrate large volumes of data from multiple sources, including DB2, SQL Server, Web API, and Teradata.
- Use validation, aggregation, and reconciliation techniques to build a rich data framework.
- Partner with data scientists and business stakeholders to understand the business problem, then design data structures tailored to the analytics solution.
- Define requirements for scalability, extensibility, performance, and maintainability, and create pipelines that meet those needs.
- Support the evolution of the enterprise data architecture, applying current and emerging data frameworks and tools, including hosting data in Cloud.
- Prepare results for interpretation and visualization, and communicate findings and potential value to influence decision-making.
- Integrate solutions into existing business processes using automation techniques.
- Apply current and emerging software engineering practices in the work.
- Provide support, training, and/or mentorship to lower level Data Engineer peers.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required background
- Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field is required; Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field is preferred.
- 6 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant work experience preferred.
- Expertise in at least one object-oriented programming language, such as Java/Scala or Python.
- Experience aligned with DevOps best practices, including CI/CD, process automation, and optimization.
- Good understanding of data architecture principles and infrastructure requirements across both on-prem and Cloud platforms.
- Ability to understand and present data in context, including how data supports a business solution.
Preferred skills
- Expertise writing complex SQL queries joining multiple tables/databases.
- Ability to independently explore databases/tables or other legacy data to identify the best data sources.
- Capability to troubleshoot complex SQL queries with limited guidance.
- Ability to create logical data models combining data from multiple sources, including internal and external data.
- Demonstrated communication skills, strong experience in financial services, leadership experience with senior and executive leadership, and attention to detail while prioritizing work and managing multiple projects.
- Guidance and direction experience for less experienced staff.
- Strong ability to understand and explain problems and communicate appropriate solutions.
- Coaching and mentoring experience for peers and team members, especially within areas of expertise.
- Comfort with change management, including responding quickly and positively to change.
- Technical leadership for data science initiatives, ensuring outputs conform to agreed quality attributes.

Compensation and location
- Location: Portland, ME (hybrid)
- Salary range: USD 89,400 - 183,500 per year
