Staff Data Engineer

The Staff Data Engineer role at Okta, within the Auth0 Data Engineering Team, leads the architectural evolution of the data platform and drives strategic platform initiatives, beginning with FEDRamp compliance. This high-impact, cross-functional position is onsite in New York, NY and collaborates with data, platform, and security teams to define the architectural roadmap and deliver scalable, secure data solutions.

Responsibilities

• Direct the architectural design and ongoing evolution of the data platform, establishing the roadmap toward its future state.
• Steer the technical strategy for large-scale platform enhancements, balancing long-term goals with incremental delivery.
• Collaborate with engineers and leaders from data, platform, and security teams to forge a cohesive and secure architecture.
• Create architectural artifacts such as design documents, threat models, and technical specifications to clarify and align on complex initiatives.
• Serve as a technical mentor and multiplier, elevating team performance through guidance, code reviews, and sharing best practices.
• Implement foundational components of the new architecture, validate designs through hands-on coding, and model best practices for others to follow.

Requirements

• Commitment to building secure, reliable, and scalable data systems.
• 8+ years of software development experience, with at least 5+ years in a data engineering or data platform role.
• Proven track record delivering large-scale, cross-functional technical initiatives.
• Extensive experience architecting and deploying data infrastructure in a cloud environment, with a strong preference for AWS.
• Deep architectural knowledge of the modern data stack, including Snowflake, dbt, and Airflow.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL, with a strong emphasis on code quality and system design.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of clarifying complex topics and driving technical decisions.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, define a path forward, and lead others to successful outcomes.

Extra Credit

• Direct experience with security frameworks such as FEDRamp, SOC 2, or HIPAA.
• Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
