Staff Machine Learning Engineer

Uber Freight Marketplace is looking for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to help modernize the Uber Freight marketplace team. In this role, you will take end-to-end ownership of machine learning models that support the marketplace, partnering closely with backend engineers to bring models into production and maintain expected performance.

The position is based in Chicago, IL (onsite), with in-office collaboration central to Uber’s culture.

Role focus

• Provide end-to-end ownership of ML models for the UF marketplace, including cost prediction, booking probability, and demand elasticity.
• Develop models and collaborate with backend engineers to productionize them.
• Ensure models work as expected after launch.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience developing ML models to solve business problems.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Familiarity with modern AI/ML frameworks, such as PyTorch.

• Product experience is a strong plus.
• Adaptive development of ML models to match business context is important.
• Previous experience with state-of-the-art marketplace technology is preferred.
• Experience with causal inference and constrained optimization.

Location and working model

• Chicago, IL (onsite).
• Unless approved for full remote work, employees must spend at least 50% of their time in-office.
• Some roles (including those at greenlight hubs) may require full-time in-office presence.

Compensation and benefits

• Salary range: USD 209,000 - 232,000 per year.
• Eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program.
• May be offered an equity award and other types of compensation.
