Job Description

The Lead Instrumentation and Controls Engineer role within Sargent & Lundy’s Energy & Industrial Group focuses on I&C design for power facilities, cross-team collaboration, and leveraging automation and AI-enabled workflows on a hybrid schedule based in Clayton, Missouri.

Responsibilities

Apply and broaden your background in instrumentation and controls engineering.
Collaborate on project teams with other I&C engineers designing new power plants, upgrading existing facilities, and improving plant controls.
Contribute to power distribution designs and develop specifications for instrumentation and controls equipment procurement and related installation services.
Coordinate design efforts across disciplines, prepare engineering calculations, and design electrical control circuits for power plant projects.
Participate in mentoring, technical sessions, and on-the-job training to deepen expertise in the engineering discipline.
Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant sites for construction coordination and field verification may be required.
Engage in peer-learning through the firm’s process systems and Communities of Practice.
Operate within a hybrid schedule based in Clayton, MO, with in-office work required three days per week.
Lead teams in guiding engineering problems from issue to solution by leveraging data and modern tools to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
Direct automation and process-improvement activities, including how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation, while ensuring results are verified and AI usage is appropriately guided.
Oversee engineers who program or script (for example, Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate tasks, with review of outputs, which is valued but not required.
Value additional learning in computer science, artificial intelligence, software engineering, or related fields to support oversight of automation and AI-enabled workflows.

Requirements

A BS or MS in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, with coursework in analog and digital control systems.
Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and designation as an Engineer in Training.
12+ years of relevant power plant and heavy industrial control systems experience.
Experience in power or industrial controls.
Understanding of practical instrumentation and controls engineering applications, including applying systems, principles, techniques, and procedures to project designs.
Experience reading and creating logic diagrams and control narratives.
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles used to produce technical plans, drawings, and models.
Proficiency with MS Office applications, with emphasis on MS Excel and MS Access.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Effective collaboration in a team environment and strong work habits.
Resourceful and enthusiastic attitude.
May require occasional travel.

Compensation Range

Compensation Range: $118,023 - $180,313
