The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join the Claims Analytics team in Worcester, MA, with hybrid or remote work options. This role focuses on building scalable data models and ETL pipelines while upholding data quality and governance to enable robust analytics and reporting.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead larger, more complex initiatives independently and manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Design scalable data models, data structures, and ETL pipelines that support analytics, reporting, and downstream consumption.
- Prioritize data quality by implementing validation checks, monitoring accuracy and completeness, and documenting data pipelines and processes.
- Collaborate with business partners and cross-functional teams on data and reporting requests.
- Be accountable for the design, development, implementation, optimization, and maintenance of data pipelines and solutions.
- Foster an ownership mindset to establish and continually improve data governance, controls, and standards, ensuring security, compliance, and scalability.
- Balance business impact, technical risk, and domain knowledge to deliver high-value outcomes.
- Coach and mentor junior team members and conduct code reviews for their work.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Information Technology, or equivalent.
- 8+ years of professional experience in data engineering, data architecture, or data analytics.
- Proficiency in advanced SQL, Python, and Java; Scala is a plus.
- Experience building SQL stored procedures and ETL pipelines using Azure Synapse (Synapse Pipelines/Data Factory).
- Active Azure DP-203 (Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate) or an equivalent certification; other Azure DP certifications or equivalents are acceptable.
- Familiarity with insurance data, with claims data highly preferred.
- Data modeling skills across conceptual, logical, and physical layers for data objects and relationships.
- Strong analytical capabilities to profile data, derive insights, and support decision-making.
- Clear communication skills to present findings and translate complex data into understandable documentation.
- Critical thinking, attention to detail, and strong mathematical abilities applicable to insurance contexts.
- Proven debugging skills and the ability to remediate issues in data solutions.
- Experience implementing data storage, access, integration, and transformation best practices within Azure, including Databricks and delta live tables.
- Track record of optimizing data pipelines for scale, performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Proficiency in relational, NoSQL, hierarchical, and entity-relationship data modeling.
- Ability to create accessible documentation of data processes and solutions for knowledge transfer and continuity.
- Experience with agile development, high-quality coding practices, and DevOps.
- Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.

COMPENSATION
Salary: USD 101,000 - 126,000 per year.
The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (which could take the form of a general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive or spot recognition awards.
