Data Engineer I, specializing in AWS and Databricks, at Travelers designs, builds, and deploys scalable data solutions to support AI and ML initiatives along with enterprise business intelligence. This onsite role in Hartford, CT invites you to grow with the Data Engineering team while advancing the organization’s analytics capabilities.

Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and operationalize sophisticated data solutions, diagnose issues, apply transformations, and propose data cleansing and quality strategies.
- Develop end-to-end data designs aligned with business needs.
- Evaluate data sources for value and determine which data should feed analytical processes.
- Incorporate core data management practices including governance, security, and quality controls.
- Collaborate across teams to support delivery and educate end users on data products and the analytic environment.
- Analyze data and system components to identify defects of moderate complexity and implement appropriate resolutions.
- Test data movement, transformation pipelines, and data components to ensure reliability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or an equivalent credential.
- Six years of related experience, plus an additional two years of software or data engineering experience.
- Strong foundations in data engineering, with hands-on experience building, optimizing, and maintaining data pipelines.
- Proficiency with cloud platforms and modern data technologies, including AWS components (Lambdas, EventBridge, Step Functions, DynamoDB, Athena) and Databricks components (Notebooks, Jobs, Unity Catalog, Genie), including Autoloader, streaming, and near real-time processing concepts.
- Experience with AI tools and concepts (for example Claude) and familiarity with developer productivity tools such as GitHub Copilot.
- Comfort with engineering and DevOps tools including Jira, GitHub, Snyk, ServiceNow, and Autosys.
- Strong programming skills and a solid grasp of software engineering practices, including testing, CI/CD, and version control.
- Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace, decompose complex tasks into incremental releases, and participate in trade-off discussions.
- Proven domain expertise with the capacity to rapidly understand technical concepts and deepen knowledge of supported systems.
- Effective problem-solving and debugging abilities, including root-cause analysis across unfamiliar codebases and addressing recurring issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication, with the ability to collaborate across teams, partners, and stakeholders.
- Intermediate leadership skills with self-motivation, ownership, and a commitment to continuous learning and growth.

Compensation Overview
The base salary for this position is governed by a nationwide market range and reflects factors such as scope, complexity, location, and the candidate’s skills, education, credentials, and experience. In addition to base pay, Travelers offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits program.
Salary Range
Range: $109,300.00 – $180,200.00
