Assistant Electrical Engineer

The FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention seeks a full-time Assistant Electrical Engineer to review fire alarm plans and inspections, coordinate with city agencies, and help develop technical guidelines for fire alarm systems.

Responsibilities

• Review fire alarm plans and related documents and render approvals or disapprovals.
• Assess submittals for fire alarm equipment reviews for Certificates of Approval and plan examinations of proposed fire alarm systems for residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies.
• Research applicable codes and standards, evaluate fire alarm technical reports, and participate in technical meetings.
• Review technical proposals for fire alarm installations submitted by other city agencies and by the fire alarm industry.
• Prepare written responses to plan and equipment review submissions.
• Assist in developing technical guidelines for fire alarm equipment documentation submissions.
• Meet with city agencies, contractors, and expeditors to discuss fire alarm installation submissions.
• Coordinate and perform inspections of fire alarm installations to determine project completion.
• Coordinate the plan review process with the Department of Buildings and other City and State Agencies.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; or
• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
• A master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in electrical engineering.
• A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable.

Minimum Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering; or
• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
• A master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in electrical engineering.
• A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable.

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge of New York City Building and Fire codes, National Fire Protection Association standards, New York City Electrical Code, New York City Construction Codes, and New York City Rules and Regulations.
• Professional Engineer license.
• Three years of fire alarm plan examination, design, and inspection experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
