Automation Engineer
Job Description
Automation Engineer role in Powell’s Automation Division (PAD) focused on engineering and commissioning intelligent products for MV/LV switchgear applications.
Responsibilities
- Build proficiency in Powell Automation Division (PAD) solutions and offerings
- Review and interpret client specifications to produce Functional Design, drawings, and test documentation aligned to project requirements and Powell procedures
- Develop relay configuration files for multiple manufacturers, including SEL, GE, Siemens, and Beckwith
- Design and configure SCADA systems using one or more of: WonderWare InTouch, Allen Bradley Factory Talk, Copa-Data Zenon, Siemens WinCC, and/or SEL RTAC HMI
- Use industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/IP, IEC61850, and DNP 3.0
- Develop PLC-based electrical monitoring and controls solutions
- Participate in and help develop documentation for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT); support start-up and commissioning activities as needed
- Follow Health, Safety & Environmental policies and procedures during all Site Services activities
- Provide technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders, including after-sales support
Requirements
- BSEE or equivalent from an accredited institution
- General knowledge of at least one of:
- Automation and Control systems
- Power Systems
- Protective Relaying
- Previous experience in automation, PLC control systems, or protective relaying is a plus
- Customer service oriented
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting or independently; adaptable; self-motivated; innovative; committed to making an impact
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience producing technical documentation and technical reports
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

Experience by Job Level
- Engineer level: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 0-3 years of relevant experience
- Senior Engineer level: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 4-8 years of relevant experience
- Lead Engineer level: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 7-10 years of relevant experience
Working & Environmental Conditions
- Onsite role in North Canton, OH
- Travel required: estimated 25% of the time to customer sites
- Customer sites may include refineries, utility substation yards, or offshore platforms
- Work may include office environment and testing on the manufacturing floor
