Commercial Building Energy & Performance Engineer
Job Description
Join Bureau Veritas Building Assessments & Project Management as a Commercial Building Energy & Performance Engineer, delivering technical consulting that improves energy performance, operations, and sustainability outcomes for commercial and multifamily properties. This role supports clients through energy audits, benchmarking, modeling, systems analysis, and reporting, with regular field travel to evaluate real-world conditions.
The position is remote (remote) with an annual salary range of USD 80,000 - 110,000. A Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of relevant commercial building experience are required, or an equivalent experience pathway is considered.
What you’ll do
- Perform ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits for commercial, institutional, municipal, and multifamily buildings.
- Conduct on-site investigations of existing building systems, including operating conditions, equipment, controls, and energy-consuming systems.
- Evaluate HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, building envelope, controls, and other building systems to assess energy performance and operational efficiency.
- Diagnose opportunities to improve performance through Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) evaluations.
- Analyze historical utility consumption, demand, operating conditions, and building performance data.
- Complete utility benchmarking using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and other applicable tools.
- Identify energy and water conservation measures and develop calculations for projected savings, implementation costs, payback, and return on investment.
- Support decarbonization and sustainability planning through recommendations related to carbon reduction, ESG, and Net Zero initiatives.
- Build energy models using eQUEST, DesignBuilder, TREAT, Trane TRACE, Wrightsoft, RemRate, or comparable platforms.
- Prepare technical deliverables including Statements of Energy Performance, utility allowance studies, carbon benchmarking analyses, and related assessments.
- Review existing energy studies, commissioning reports, benchmarking data, building documentation, and other technical information to locate performance improvement opportunities.
- Assess major energy-consuming system condition and operational performance, identifying potential repair, replacement, optimization, or controls improvements.
- Collect and analyze field data, utility data, equipment information, operating schedules, and building performance metrics.
- Create energy savings and life-cycle or financial analyses to support client decision-making.
- Prioritize recommendations based on energy savings, cost, payback, operational impact, and client objectives, including planning-level guidance for upgrades and efficiency initiatives.
- Assist with development of capital improvement and energy improvement recommendations when required by project scope.
- Research applicable building codes, energy standards, utility programs, incentives, and industry best practices as needed.
- Produce comprehensive technical reports documenting audit findings, deficiencies, conservation measures, benchmarking results, and recommendations.
- Translate technical results into practical recommendations for building owners, facility managers, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Present findings and recommendations as required, including participation in client meetings, project kickoff meetings, site visits, and technical presentations.
- Collaborate with internal engineering, sustainability, commissioning, and technical teams on multidisciplinary projects.
- Manage assigned project tasks, schedules, deliverables, and documentation while meeting productivity, report quality, and client service expectations.
- Travel regularly to client properties for field assessments and project work, maintain confidentiality, and follow company policies, quality standards, SOPs, and safety requirements.
Required qualifications
- Experience evaluating existing commercial buildings and building systems.
- Experience performing or supporting commercial building energy audits, preferably ASHRAE Level II or III.
- Working knowledge of ASHRAE energy auditing methodologies and commercial building energy performance.
- Understanding of commercial HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, building envelope, and control systems.
- Experience with BAS/BEMS, building controls, or existing-building commissioning.
- Experience analyzing utility consumption and building energy performance.
- Experience with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, utility benchmarking, energy conservation measures, and energy savings calculations.
- Experience with energy modeling software including eQUEST, DesignBuilder, TREAT, Trane TRACE, Wrightsoft, RemRate, or comparable platforms.
- Strong analytical, technical writing, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to conduct independent field investigations and accurately document technical findings.
- Ability to analyze technical information and translate findings into practical client recommendations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and applicable energy, modeling, and project management software.
- Ability to operate an electronic tablet for field data collection.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly to client sites.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline and at least three (3) years of relevant commercial building experience, or five (5) years of progressively responsible equivalent experience in lieu of a degree.
- Residential-only experience does not satisfy the experience requirement.
