Computational Mechanics Project Engineer

Thornton Tomasetti’s Applied Science team is seeking a Computational Mechanics Project Engineer to tackle real-world engineering challenges through advanced finite element analysis (FEA). In this onsite role in Washington, DC, you will apply both engineering-level tools and FEA to evaluate structural vulnerability under extreme loading conditions and help develop workflows that improve how analysis results are produced and interpreted.

You will also contribute to research and engineering solution design aimed at protecting structures and understanding why failures occur, working closely with a team to deliver meaningful, innovative outputs across a range of project needs.

Role focus

• Perform advanced analysis and research on engineering and scientific problems using engineering-level tools and finite element analysis (FEA).
• Assess the vulnerability of structures to a variety of extreme loads.
• Design engineering solutions to protect structures against extreme load effects.
• Investigate root causes of structural failures.
• Work in a team environment to address wide-ranging problems and manage individual tasks in coordination with team members.

Additional contributions

• Contribute to the development of custom pre- and post-processing tools for FEA workflows.
• Support interpretation of FEA results through improved tooling and analysis processes.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in structural or mechanical engineering (or equivalent) with a track record of academic achievement.
• Coursework in FEM/FEA, structural dynamics, and mechanics of materials.
• Professional experience in engineering mechanics, structural dynamics, and FEA.
• Demonstrated proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, R, and C++.
• Ability to secure US security clearance for US government projects; US security clearance requires the applicant to be a US citizen.

Compensation

• USD 100,000 - 125,000 per year
• Actual pay rates may vary from the range as permitted by the District of Columbia Equal Pay Transparency Law
