Job Description

Build the reporting “middle layer” that turns raw warehouse data into consistent, trustworthy analytics products used across dashboards and applications.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain the reporting view layer in SQL Server / Azure SQL, delivering governed, documented views that act as the single contract between raw data and downstream consumers
  • Convert business definitions into durable T-SQL logic so metrics are defined once and reused across reports, dashboards, and applications
  • Own the structure of Analysis Services / Power BI semantic models, including tables, relationships, and core measures, so report builders work from a clean, performant foundation
  • Create validation checks and reconciliation queries to detect issues early, investigate discrepancies, trace them to root cause, and remediate at the correct layer
  • Write efficient T-SQL and tune reporting workloads, including knowing when a view should be an indexed view, a materialized table, or redesigned for better performance
  • Maintain clear documentation for the reporting schema, metric definitions, and data lineage to keep the warehouse understandable and reduce tribal knowledge
  • Use AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to accelerate T-SQL development, documentation, and code review, while maintaining full accountability for production correctness
  • Partner with data engineering on upstream schema changes, BI developers on model needs, and business stakeholders to translate ambiguous requests into precise, correct data definitions

Requirements

  • 3+ years hands-on with SQL Server or Azure SQL in analytics, data warehousing, or reporting
  • Expert-level T-SQL: complex joins, window functions, CTEs, plus judgment to ensure results are correct rather than just returning rows
  • Proven experience with dimensional modeling and reporting-layer design (star schemas, conformed dimensions, slowly changing logic), including strong opinions on when to diverge from conventions
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack: Analysis Services (tabular), Power BI semantic models, and enough DAX to design models that measure-writers can build on
  • Comfort using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to draft and debug complex SQL, with the judgment to validate AI-generated logic before production
  • Demonstrated ability to turn vague business questions into precise data definitions, including defending data quality even when speed might be tempting
  • Strong written communication skills for documentation, view comments, and metric definitions read by both engineers and executives

  • Access to a financial planner
  • Option for career advancement, professional development, and continuing education
  • Primarily in-office position, with flexibility for remote work if needed

Nice to Have

  • Experience in healthcare, clinical, or other regulated data environments
  • Exposure to version-controlled model development (TMDL, Tabular Editor, Git-based workflows)
  • Power Query / M experience, or experience supporting Excel-based analytical consumers of the warehouse
  • Familiarity with modern analytics engineering tooling and practices (dbt or similar), even if the stack is SQL-native
  • Experience evaluating or adopting AI-assisted BI features (e.g., Power BI Copilot, natural language query tools) in a reporting environment

Location

  • Overland Park, KS or Omaha, NE (onsite)
