Job Description

In this Data Engineer II role within Amazon.com Services LLC, you will help build the data infrastructure that supports labor planning across the Amazon delivery network. UTR Planning Tech uses engineering foundations and an emerging AI-native approach to improve how planning systems are fed, validated, and operated at scale.

The team is moving away from hand-coded pipelines toward reusable, configuration-driven frameworks supported by AI agents. You will own key parts of the data architecture, design AI-powered data workflows, and raise standards for data quality, self-service access, and engineering execution.

What you’ll do

  • Design and own logical and physical data models for major datasets, producing coherent models that enable physical design and serve multiple downstream consumers.
  • Build and optimize ETL pipelines for complex datasets using AWS services including Redshift, S3, EMR, Glue, Lambda, and Athena, with orchestration using Python-based Airflow/MWAA for solutions that are testable, maintainable, and efficient.
  • Own the design of configuration-driven data frameworks that replace repetitive custom code for ingestion, transformation, and metric curation, using reusable and declarative patterns.
  • Build AI agent tooling and MCP-based interfaces so conversational agents can generate SQL, validate configurations, manage data quality rules, and execute pipeline operations through natural language.
  • Drive ongoing data quality for datasets you build by implementing standardized data contracts, defining SLAs, running data certification processes, and automating manual quality steps.
  • Collaborate with planning scientists, software engineers, BI engineers, and product managers to balance customer needs with technical constraints, influencing what gets built and how it’s shaped.
  • Improve self-service data access by creating analytical data models and tooling that reduce reliance on the DE team for common access patterns.
  • Improve engineering processes by automating manual operations, establishing monitoring and alerting standards, and strengthening code quality and dependency management practices.
  • Mentor engineers and interns, including training new team members on how the team’s data solutions are constructed, operated, and aligned with the broader architecture.
  • Participate in interview processes and contribute to recruiting for the team.

Minimum requirements

  • 3+ years of data engineering experience.
  • 1+ years developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics using ETL/ELT processes.
  • 1+ years developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics using OLAP technologies.
  • 1+ years developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics using data modeling.
  • 1+ years developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics using SQL.
  • 1+ years developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics using Oracle.
  • Experience with data modeling, warehousing, and building ETL pipelines.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with AWS technologies such as Redshift, S3, AWS Glue, EMR, Kinesis, FireHose, Lambda, and IAM roles and permissions.
  • Experience with non-relational databases/data stores including object storage, document or key-value stores, graph databases, or column-family databases.

Role context and scale
