Design Engineer
Job Description
Bratney Companies is seeking a Design Engineer to help plan and develop design and engineering activities that support project layout and construction needs. In this onsite role in Urbandale, IA, you will coordinate with project leadership and cross-functional teams to advance design work, support reviews, and help ensure deliverables align with company standards, budgets, and timelines.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Project Manager and Project Development Manager with project flow, layout, and design aspects.
- Apply standard engineering practices to analyze data and results, identifying practical solutions to basic engineering problems.
- Conduct special studies or analysis for specific portions of a project, including conventional design types and related research, investigation, survey, or equipment work.
- Coordinate design efforts with other project personnel and provide design information to construction department personnel when needed.
- Prepare basic design sketches for drafting and incorporate them into design criteria, coordinating with others to help minimize design conflicts.
- Review designer drawings for clarity, correctness, and constructability.
- Oversee production of site development drawings and related deliverables, including process flow diagrams, development of material lists, concrete foundation detailing, structural steel layout, equipment layout, dust ducting layout and detailing, and the design and detailing of sheet metal fabrications to meet company standards within budget and timeframe.
- Develop preliminary layouts, coordinating engineering and design activities with construction and reviewing manufacturer data and drawings against project design criteria.
- Maintain and monitor the design budget portion of project estimates, coordinating and communicating savings and overages with the Project Manager.
- Work with vendors to coordinate design details and assist with the development of subcontractor bid packages.
- Contact vendors and subcontractors for pricing, complete material take-offs, and perform quantity analysis.
- Enter data in the estimating system as required and draft purchase orders and subcontracts for Project Manager approval.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the Project Contract Documents and subcontracts, identifying and resolving potential document-related problems.
- Schedule and participate in design reviews during the design/drafting phase with the Engineering & Design Manager, engineers, construction managers, and project supervisors as applicable.
- Assist the Engineering & Design Manager, Project Manager, and Project Superintendent as needed with measurements and installation questions.
- Maintain open and positive communication with clients, subcontractors, engineers, engineering and design leadership, project management, and construction management.
- Assist with marketing efforts as directed.
- Travel as required to support projects in remote locations and perform other functions as assigned.
Requirements
- Travel will be required up to approximately 25%.
- Clean driving record and a valid driver’s license.
