Electrical Engineer Substation - Lead
Job Description
Lead conceptual electrical engineering for major substation capital projects across New York, with oversight of external detailed design support.
Responsibilities
- Drive capital project engineering performance across all phases: scoping and budgeting, conceptual engineering, contract management and design, engineering design, construction, and closeout
- Complete standard and complex electrical engineering analyses, designs, and calculations using established methodology and principles
- Create alternate methods or design concepts to resolve technical problems and improve processes or services
- Lead and build new conceptual designs, including oversight of external detailed designers
- Resolve unique and complex electrical engineering problems and evaluate solution options using standard procedures related to lines and power engineering
- Ensure designs meet company, local, state, and national codes and standards for implementation
- Support technical requests from current and proposed customers
- Use technical knowledge to influence and guide engineers within the department
- Provide technical leadership for complex projects with broad departmental impact
- Mentor, develop, and support team technical capability
- Collaborate across departments
- Act as liaison and direct contractors on company policy, standards, and best practices
- Work independently with limited supervision
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and 7 years minimum relevant experience
- Theoretical engineering knowledge covering planning, operations, and engineering design, including analytic work: modeling and calculation, understanding the business model, and applying a global view of the organization
- Practical engineering experience applying planning, operations, engineering design, and construction (including economic analyses of engineering alternatives and development of business cases for stakeholder review)
- Ability to adequately document and interpret engineering documentation
- Ability to review and approve engineering work completed by others to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements
- Knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment, including local, state, and federal regulatory standards and requirements
- Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills for unique technical and analytical issues
- Proven ability to lead and manage projects
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to articulate highly technical concepts
- Strong management and leadership skills, including ability to drive change and adoption of new technologies
- Knowledge of regulatory environment, including relevant output and incentive mechanisms
- General contract, commercial, and regulatory awareness with ability to balance customer service and project delivery to support maximum return on investment
- Track record of effective stakeholder and customer service engagement and management
- Ability to communicate and present information effectively at all levels
- Ability to manage competing priorities using sound engineering and financial judgment to determine optimal solutions
- Awareness and understanding of key business drivers
- Ability to devise solutions for common and complex problems and challenges
- Where appropriate, technical and operational experience in a relevant engineering role within a utility environment
- Construction and maintenance standards aligned with regulatory requirements; engineering standards and specifications up to 345k
