Field Engineer - Bridges and Traffic Control
Job Description
Field Engineer role in Macon, GA providing on-site construction and technical management for bridges and traffic control projects.
Responsibilities
- Provide overall on-site construction and technical management for assigned projects
- Support administrative and construction activities as directed by the Project Manager or Supervisor
- Review proposals, project specifications, plans, and engineering drawings
- Complete material takeoffs and support cost estimates
- Participate in pre-bid investigations and site meetings
- Develop and implement work plans to maintain efficient project progress
- Help establish and maintain quality control procedures
- Monitor and track project costs, materials, labor, and equipment
- Coordinate and schedule equipment and resources
- Administer and help enforce jobsite safety programs and procedures
- Maintain strong relationships with project owners, subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and field personnel
- Identify and resolve field problems, conflicts, and discrepancies
- Communicate field conditions, changes, and project needs to management
- Coordinate day-to-day activities with subcontractors, suppliers, and crews
- Help supervise and direct crews when needed
- Take a hands-on approach by stepping in and working alongside the field team as necessary
- Operate equipment such as forklifts when needed and appropriate
- Monitor project schedules and help keep work on track
- Read, interpret, and understand construction plans, specifications, and engineering drawings
- Recognize potential issues or discrepancies early and escalate as needed
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required
Requirements
- 5–7 years of construction experience, preferably in heavy civil, highway, bridge, or related construction
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
- Ability to plan, supervise, and execute work safely, efficiently, and within budget
- Hands-on construction experience and willingness to jump in when needed
- Strong understanding of construction scheduling, cost control, materials, and field operations
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, construction plans, and owner specifications
- Strong knowledge of construction safety practices and current OSHA and federal safety requirements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional attention to detail with ability to identify discrepancies and potential problems
- Strong work ethic and commitment to doing the job right the first time
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to take initiative without waiting to be told
- Ability to multitask and manage changing priorities
- Ability to work independently and be a strong team player
- Comfort taking on different responsibilities and wearing multiple hats
- Ability to lead or run a crew when needed
- Ability to work effectively with owners, subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and field employees
- Must be able to freely access all areas of an active construction site
- Must be able to work in a variety of climates and environmental conditions
- Must be prepared to work in extreme heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions
- Must be able to handle physically strenuous and demanding conditions on construction sites
- Comfortable working around heavy equipment, traffic, and other active construction hazards
- Flexible schedule, including nights and weekends as needed
- Must be able to work independently while staying on top of project schedules and deadlines
- All work is in GA (Middle GA and ATL)
- May require 5–10 hotel overnight stays throughout the year depending on the project
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen
- Adherence to company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices
- Strong commitment to jobsite safety and quality

- Flexible schedule and willingness to work extended hours when project needs require it
Preferred Experience
- GDOT projects, particularly experience working as a contractor
- Interstate construction and traffic control experience
- New bridge construction experience
- Bridge maintenance experience
- Heavy civil or heavy highway construction experience
- Experience working with major heavy civil or bridge contractors
- Previous experience with companies such as Kiewit, C.W. Matthews, ER Snell, or similar heavy bridge/highway contractors is a plus

Compensation
- $105,000 - $115,000 per year
- Salary: $110,000 annual salary
