HVAC Control Systems Engineer II
Job Description
Johnson Controls is seeking an on-site HVAC Control Systems Engineer II in Arlington Heights, IL to design, configure, commission, and operate comprehensive building control systems including fire, security, and other low voltage subsystems.
Responsibilities
- Design, configure, and operate complete building control systems including fire, security, and other low voltage subsystems (lighting, nurse call, data networks, etc.) to meet project requirements.
- Ensure design quality, timeliness, and efficiency, with accountability to field teams.
- Develop complex software programs, commission them, and troubleshoot to ensure proper system operation.
- Prepare detailed information and submittals to communicate design and operation to customers, consultants, the Johnson Controls field installation team, and subcontractors.
- Create technically complex building control system designs per contract documents; produce flow diagrams, sequence of operations, bill of materials, network layouts, and electrical schematics as required.
- Develop and test software programs necessary to operate the system in alignment with project intent.
- Coordinate and generate drawings and equipment schedules for submittals and installation.
- Select, order, and track materials for assigned projects.
- Coordinate factory-mounting processes to meet factory and project schedules.
- Assist in loading and commissioning of system and network-level controllers as required.
- Assist in validating full system functionality and resolve issues with subcontractors and other trades to ensure proper operation.
- Provide field change information to support as-built drawings and software updates.
- Keep management and customers informed of job progress and issues.
- Assist in site-specific owner/operator training on the total building control system.
- Participate in release meetings with the project field team.
- Perform value engineering to deliver cost-effective results while maintaining customer satisfaction.
- May provide work directions to Systems Design Assistants.
- Adhere to safety standards with a strong emphasis on safety for employees and subcontractors.
- Travel is required for this role.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering and a minimum of 3 years of experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the construction or HVAC industry.
- Solid understanding of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and other building subsystems.
- Experience with Johnson Controls software programming.
- Experience integrating low voltage building subsystems using industry protocols such as LON and BACnet.
- Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
- Advanced computer skills, particularly with computer-aided drafting tools.
- Regular travel availability.

Hiring salary range
- USD 80,600 – 114,000 per year
- Salary determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; includes a competitive bonus plan and comprehensive benefits
