Hydraulics Engineer

What you’ll do

As a Hydraulics Engineer, you will help plan, analyze, design, and deliver drainage and stormwater solutions for transportation infrastructure projects. Depending on experience level, your scope may include complex technical work, leading drainage design efforts, and providing technical guidance and quality review across deliverables.

• Prepare drainage studies, hydraulic calculations, stormwater management analyses, and supporting technical documentation
• Develop culvert, bridge hydraulics, closed drainage system, and floodplain evaluation designs
• Create erosion and sediment control plans and support permitting and environmental compliance efforts
• Apply SCDOT standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices to develop effective drainage solutions
• Coordinate with roadway, structures, environmental, and survey teams throughout project development
• Participate in technical reviews and quality control efforts
• Collaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders as needed
• Lead drainage and stormwater design efforts on complex transportation projects
• Provide technical guidance and quality review for project deliverables
• Mentor junior engineers and support staff development
• Assist with project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and business development activities
• Serve as a technical resource for hydraulic engineering challenges across multiple projects

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required
• 4 to 12 years of hydraulic and hydrologic engineering experience
• Experience working with SCDOT is required
• South Carolina PE License required for senior candidates; mid-level candidates must be able to obtain within six months
• Strong understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, drainage design, and stormwater management principles
• Experience with SCDOT design standards, drainage criteria, and project development processes
• Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) and related drainage modeling tools preferred
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Mentoring junior staff and coordinating technical tasks is a plus
