Instrumentation & Controls Engineer
Job Description
GEM Technology seeks an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer for a contract assignment located onsite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The role leads the design and development of I&C systems for the ITER project, coordinating with mechanical engineering, system engineering, and multidisciplinary analysis teams to satisfy ITER requirements. The position offers a salary range of USD 140,000 - 170,000 per year and requires a minimum of five years of I&C engineering experience, with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Nuclear, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with instrumentation and control engineers, mechanical engineers, designers, and analysts to develop detailed design packages.
- Review and verify drawings and documents produced by designers or other engineers for accuracy and consistency.
- Assist in the design of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Create panel wiring schemes and interconnect cabling layouts.
- Design panel layouts and perform enclosure cooling calculations.
- Generate control system input/output lists and instrumentation inventories.
- Develop power distribution single line diagrams.
- Formulate control strategies and state transition diagrams.
- Prepare hardware descriptions for the control system, including requirements, functional specifications, and architecture descriptions.
- Draft control software requirements specifications and control software design descriptions.
- Specify PLC systems and configurations.
- Specify vacuum gauges and controllers used in instrumentation.
- Develop procedures and participate in qualification of instrumentation for high magnetic field areas, EMI/EMC testing, gamma and neutron radiation testing, among others.
- Collaborate with ORNL analysts to determine appropriate magnetic shielding for instrumentation.
- Prepare factory acceptance test procedures.
- Draft statements of work for I&C design and fabrication activities.
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Act as a self-starting professional with strong interpersonal skills and willingness to take a lead role.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Nuclear, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 5 years of I&C engineering design and hands-on experience, including:
- P&ID preparation
- PLC system design
- Enclosure design
- Cable design
- Control software design
- Knowledge of I&C engineering practices, including drawings, specifications, and codes
- Experience developing state transition diagrams, electrical load lists, and wiring diagrams
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally and domestically as required
- Strong writing ability to produce coherent design documents
- Self-starter capable of working independently and in a team
- Proficiency with office tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
- Instrumentation & Controls engineering experience required
