Lead Engineer - Standards

Job Description

Advance transmission construction and design standards for overhead and underground electric lines by leading engineering teams, specs, and technical guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed, complex engineering analyses, designs, and calculations using standard methodology, principles, and approved alternatives.
  • Create alternate methods or design concepts to address standards engineering challenges and improve processes or services.
  • Resolve unique standards engineering problems using broad technical perspective.
  • Apply forensic analysis, material evaluations, material applications, and construction standards to support engineering decisions.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering drawings such as schematics and one-line diagrams.
  • Develop and specify equipment, assemble assignment documentation, and define complex requirements using deep expertise in electric transmission line engineering.
  • Serve as a technical SME for distribution equipment including conductors, switches, poles, and structures.
  • Anticipate internal and external business considerations and recommend process improvements.
  • Participate in industry associations to support standards knowledge and continuous learning.
  • Act as a facilitator, mentor, and reviewer of other engineers’ work.
  • Assess customer and stakeholder needs and recommend actions aligned to those requirements.
  • Explain complex concepts and influence others to adopt appropriate changes.
  • Lead engineering teams to complete assigned tasks and projects.
  • Guide and mentor engineers in standards engineering methodology.
  • Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines, and Avangrid policies and procedures.
  • Interpret processes and standards related to electrical equipment and recommend solutions and best practices.
  • Represent Standards in projects, task forces, and studies.
  • Develop business cases and manage projects, processes, and initiatives or teams in line with applicable Avangrid guidelines.
  • Coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a project or program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • 7 years minimum experience performing engineering duties (preference for 10 years).
  • Advanced specialized training or a graduate-level engineering degree is required.
  • Professional engineer (PE) license is desirable.
  • In-depth experience in electric transmission line engineering, including knowledge of internal, external, and regulatory issues.
  • Maintain knowledge of leading-edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations, with ability to explain complex concepts and influence others.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with regulatory and/or public entities.
  • Ability to lead a team and mentor others.

Location

  • Augusta, ME (onsite)
  • Reports in office to: Augusta, Maine

Compensation

  • Salary range: USD 130,000 - 145,800 per year
  • Base salary range depends on experience and location (within $130,000 - $145,800)

Additional Compliance and Emergency Roles

  • Employees may be assigned a NERC Reliability Standards compliance role supporting Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and/or Operations and Planning (O&P).
  • NERC compliance role responsibilities may include additional access protections, training, audit engagement, and required evidence retention (communicated by management).
  • Avangrid employees may be assigned a system emergency role and may be required to work outside: applicable to employees working in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York within Avangrid Network and Corporate functions (not applicable to those working for Avangrid Power).
