Job Description

Power electronics that support climate control is the focus of this onsite role at Trane Technologies in La Crosse, WI. You will help design next-generation electrical systems for climate control products with a strong emphasis on industrial chillers, combining project ownership with hands-on power conversion design, modeling, and lab qualification. This position also aligns engineering work to broader sustainability goals.

Compensation: $84,740 - $118,860 per year (salary). Work model: Monday to Thursday onsite; Fridays offer flexibility based on what your work requires.

What You’ll Do

  • Own projects end-to-end by building project plans, prioritizing work, tracking milestones, and proactively spotting quality and productivity improvements.
  • Collaborate on teams to evaluate customer issues and make technology choices that keep Trane Technologies at the forefront.
  • Translate end-product solutions into system and power electronic module requirements, including thermal management needs, EMC/EMI compliance considerations, and motor control algorithms.
  • Apply expertise across multiple power electronic topologies to develop DC-DC converters, AC-DC-AC power conversion units, and other advanced devices.
  • Run in-depth analysis and model-based simulations for electromechanical rotational machines, power electronics, and control systems using tools such as Matlab/Simulink/SimScape, PSIM, and PLECS.
  • Lead lab qualification by creating test plans, selecting and defining testing equipment, and executing qualification testing.
  • Analyze test data and deliver comprehensive technical reports to support design reliability, durability, and safety.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and Procurement to support supplier onboarding and part-release workflows, including engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical specifications.
  • Network across the enterprise to identify opportunities to integrate new technologies, and partner with product teams, customers, and suppliers to resolve technical issues.
  • Contribute to intellectual property efforts by filing for patents on novel solutions developed during the transition from end-product needs to system and module requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Engineering Physics.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant electrical engineering work experience.
  • Strong interest in HVAC applications, operating conditions for industrial refrigeration equipment, and application of battery energy storage systems.
  • Experience with electric systems simulation software (including MATLAB SimScape and PLECs) and the ability to present data showing why one architecture is preferred over another.
  • Strong understanding of embedded control systems, including the ability to specify and integrate modules into a functioning system.
  • Experience with system communications, message databases, and analysis tools is preferred.
  • Ability to write custom engineering development scripts to run design verification tests.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including translating complex technical information for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivation and capability to manage small-scale projects, set priorities, track risks and obstacles, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint) for milestone tracking and engineering documentation.
