Product Design Engineer
Job Description
This Product Design Engineer role at Service Wire focuses on preserving and managing product specifications and attributes while collaborating with internal teams and external partners to support product descriptions and application inquiries. The position is on site in Houston, TX, with the possibility of engagement from Culloden, WV as part of the broader organizational needs.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Corporate Engineering Manager in defining customer‑oriented product objectives, setting specification priorities, and establishing ongoing performance standards.
- Work with marketing and sales to guide the evolution of products.
- Maintain specifications and attributes across the company catalog.
- Review current production processes and parameters to ensure specifications are met by product type.
- Carry out process engineering tasks aimed at cost savings and production gains while maintaining specification standards throughout production.
- Prepare periodic status updates for leadership teams.
- Ensure compliance with codes, guidelines, best practices, and company policies.
- Collaborate with end users and external specifying engineers to ensure the appropriate products are offered for specific applications.
- Oversee ongoing product development efforts related to specifications and end user markets.
- Identify specification opportunities to enter new markets in collaboration with the sales teams.
- Manage compliance with customer specifications and coordinate with Quality Assurance and Control to ensure adherence.
- Serve as the primary interface with external customers for electrical product inquiries and clarifications.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field is required; an advanced degree in business, engineering, or a related area is a plus.
- Minimum of three years of experience in design, specification engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Industrial experience is required; a background in wire and cable or the electrical sector is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Solid specification experience, preferably within the electrical industry.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Proven time management abilities with a track record of meeting deadlines.
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment and collaborate across multiple teams.
- Experience with quality systems and understanding of specification requirements.
- Strong working knowledge of software such as ETap and circuit design tools.
- Experience with UL, ASTM, ICEA and NFPA wire and cable regulations is a plus.
- Effective analytical and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to influence without direct authority.
- Willingness to be available for technical inquiries as they arise.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

This role reports to the Corporate Engineering Manager, responsible for Technical and Product Quality.
Special Position Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
