Job Description

Professional Engineer role within the Steuben County Department of Public Works focused on complex civil engineering duties with emphasis on bridge design, inspection, certification, and advisory support to the Commissioner.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute a broad range of high level civil engineering tasks within the Department of Public Works.
  • Direct design, inspection, and certification activities for county bridge construction and reconstruction projects, including hands on oversight.
  • Serve as an engineering consultant to the Commissioner of Public Works.
  • Provide input on matters requiring professional engineering expertise, including county roads and building initiatives.
  • Supervise engineering staff and oversee field operations to ensure adherence to designs and specifications.
  • Operate under the Commissioner’s general direction with substantial autonomy due to the technical nature of the work.
  • Collaborate closely with division supervisors, offering guidance, monitoring results, and conducting inspections as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a regionally accredited college or NYS professional engineer registration.
  • Four years of full‑time civil engineering experience, including at least two years in bridge design, construction, or maintenance activities.
  • New York State Professional Engineer license is required for appointment and continued employment.

Distinguishing Features

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and four years of full‑time paid civil engineering experience, including two years in bridge design, construction, or maintenance activities.

Special Requirement(s)

  • Possession of a currently valid license to practice as a Professional Engineer in New York State is required for appointment and continued employment.
