Semi-Retired Professional Engineer

SMC is seeking a Maryland-licensed Professional Engineer to contribute on a part-time or full-time basis with flexible hours. This role can be performed remotely or from a Maryland office, supporting an internal workflow centered on quality control for inspections of existing stormwater infrastructure, with additional design and analysis support when needed.

Role overview

• Conduct quality control reviews for inspections of existing stormwater infrastructure.
• Provide water resources engineering support, including design and/or calculations, depending on candidate background.
• Support stormwater-related projects with an emphasis on existing infrastructure, including design and analysis as applicable.
• Produce work product online and participate in video remote meetings, with communication via computer.

Required qualifications

• Maryland Professional Engineer licensure, with immediate candidacy or reciprocity acceptable. This requirement is mandatory with no exceptions.
• A degree or equivalent experience in civil or agricultural/biological engineering.
• Stormwater treatment facilities and/or water resources engineering experience is absolutely required.
• Good communication skills (respectful, friendly, courteous, and outgoing when needed).
• Reliable broadband internet access with acceptable speed.

Design consideration (background that will be prioritized)

• Experience and a clear understanding of hydrology and hydraulics, including TR-55, TR-20, and HEC-RAS (or similar).
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D, since CAD drafting is a key part of the design/draft culture.
• Experience preparing permit and construction drawings and specifications.
• Experience navigating stormwater approvals with counties, Soil Conservation Districts, and/or the Maryland Department of the Environment.

Compensation and benefits

The hourly rate is USD 40 - 70 per hour.
