Senior Manufacturing Engineer
Job Description
This onsite Senior Manufacturing Engineer role at Armstrong Fluid Technology in North Tonawanda, NY focuses on optimizing production processes, advancing product and process development, ensuring high quality, and leading lean initiatives across our manufacturing operations. The position offers a salary range of USD 90,000 to 110,000 per year and requires an engineering degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering with at least five years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and optimize manufacturing processes to increase efficiency, shorten cycle times, and remove bottlenecks.
- Apply technical improvements and new technologies to raise productivity, product quality, and throughput.
- Develop sustainable manufacturing practices aimed at minimizing environmental impact.
- Conduct regular process reviews, identify control points, and implement corrective actions to sustain First-Time Quality and drive continuous improvement.
- Coordinate the handoff of completed projects to the shop floor, ensuring a smooth transition to operations teams.
- Support the development of new products and processes, fostering effective collaboration among manufacturing, technical, and quality groups.
- Collaborate on creating and monitoring labor routings, process control plans, and testing plans for new products.
- Participate in Kaizen events and other process-improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency.
- Coordinate updates to labor routings, process controls, and work instructions to boost productivity, quality, and FTQ.
- Build capability and knowledge of welding at both in-house and supplier sites, continually improving welding process performance.
- Drive throughput and on-time delivery improvements across manufacturing departments to meet production goals.
- Develop and monitor new product work cells to optimize workflows and support manufacturing performance.
- Plan and conduct value stream analyses to determine the optimal sequence of operations and streamline production flow.
- Support daily triage reporting and provide weekly updates to align with customer fulfillment and performance goals.
- Review and approve engineering drawings in PDM, ensuring timely processing of new and revised versions.
- Coordinate productivity improvements for manufactured parts in line with drawing changes.
- Participate in weekly Engineering Change Review Board meetings to ensure project deadlines and objectives are met.
- Contribute to plant safety and quality initiatives, including Job Hazard Analyses and FTQ metrics.
- Collaborate with the Safety Committee to monitor and improve JHA metrics across work cells.
- Implement corrective actions addressing quality and safety concerns based on FTQ metrics and employee feedback.
- Engage in monthly Health & Safety Committee meetings, presenting actions supporting safety and quality improvements.
- Work closely with technical, quality, procurement, and production teams to resolve complex manufacturing issues, optimize processes, and meet product specifications.
- Support the procurement team in sourcing materials and suppliers that meet quality and cost standards.
- Assist the Quality Department with Corrective Action meetings and the development of PPAP documentation.
- Drive lean manufacturing initiatives, including cycle-time measurement, bottleneck identification, and applying lean principles such as 5S, Kaizen, and value stream mapping.
- Lead or participate in continuous improvement activities to streamline processes, reduce waste, and improve efficiency and product quality.
- Promote lean principles across the organization, including collaboration with the AFSS team to integrate lean practices into automated systems.
Requirements
- Engineering degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Ten years of demonstrated experience in manufacturing technology functions, ideally within industrial, automotive, or aerospace manufacturing environments.
- Five years of fabrication engineering experience.
- Five years of welding experience.
- Five years of experience in Lean manufacturing; experience leading Lean promotion is preferred.
- Strong background in large assembly processes, painting, welding, and testing.
- Proficiency in designing fixtures and tooling; experience with SolidWorks.
- Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for designing and reviewing assembly drawings; ability to design jigs and fixtures for manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC), root cause analysis, and failure mode effects analysis (FMEA).
- Strong understanding of process improvement methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and 5S.
- Experience integrating new automation technologies and systems into production environments, leading to improved throughput and quality.
- Experience developing and optimizing process control plans and testing plans.
- Self-directed with the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, focused on results.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in English for written and spoken communication.
- Detail-oriented with robust organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
