Senior Powertrain Engineer
Job Description
HFE International is seeking a Senior Powertrain Engineer to test, develop, and troubleshoot propulsion systems for both the company and its customers. This role includes supporting engine testing and new product development, calibrating new production engine systems, and leading a group of test engineers while interfacing with customers during engine package design and diagnostics.
This onsite position is based in Chicago, IL. The role offers USD 90,000 - 130,000 per year and is best suited for candidates with advanced mechanical engineering training and practical experience in engine development and calibration.
Job Purpose
- Test, develop and troubleshoot propulsion systems for the company and customers.
Responsibilities
- Develop engine systems and subsystems.
- Design and develop new engines.
- Run engines on the dyno and calibrate EFI system maps.
- Write test plans and test reports.
- Interface with customers and support their questions related to engine package design.
- Travel to customer sites to support engine diagnostics, with international travel common.
- Diagnose failure modes.
- Perform propeller analysis.
- Perform thermal analysis.
- Provide documentation, drawings, and test reports as requested.
- Manage a team of test engineers.
Requirements
- Experience with engine designs, preferably 2-stroke.
- Experience with engine tuning and EFI calibration maps.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Scientific Process.
- MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
- Knowledge of combustion process and thermodynamics.
- Basic understanding of engines (2-stroke and 4-stroke).
- MATLAB experience.
- Python experience.
- Experience with National Instruments data acquisition hardware and analysis.

Educational Requirements
- MS or PhD in Engineering or Physics.

- This position involves engine noise levels that are within OSHA guidelines as long as the employee wears the proper PPE while the engine is in operation.
- This position involves transporting documents and parts to various customers and vendors in the Tucson area. Transportation within the Tucson area will not be compensated for. Any travel outside of Tucson will be compensated for with standard GSA approved travel and lodging rates.
