Job Description

Senior Software Engineer to develop software for Alphatec Spine's surgical navigation and robotics platform, onsite in Louisville, CO, with a salary range of USD 130,000 - 150,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, maintain, and document software applications, with validation aligned to quality and regulatory standards.
  • Engage in all phases of product development as needed, including requirements review, design discussions, usability considerations, risk assessment, and testing execution.
  • Support achievement of team objectives by building collaborative relationships and reaching consensus on assignments.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, systems, software, and test engineers to integrate multidisciplinary components.
  • Create high quality Unix/Linux based applications and frameworks, emphasizing robust design and maintainability.
  • Develop application software in C++ and contribute to software architecture decisions.
  • Partner with marketing and cross-functional R&D teams to evaluate, prioritize, and define future product features.
  • Conduct integration and system-level testing of software and software/hardware systems.
  • Produce documentation for software projects, including design artifacts and test plans/cases.
  • Estimate tasks, plan software projects, and manage multiple initiatives and priorities concurrently.
  • Attend surgical cases, engage with surgeons, and stay informed about current company initiatives across technical domains.
  • Collaborate with R&D and Marketing to support clinical prototyping, testing, and cadaveric lab evaluations.
  • Provide technical support for field-deployed software applications as needed.
  • Work with clinical and field teams to investigate issues, perform root-cause analysis, and drive product improvements.
  • Participate in occasional on-site visits to assist with issue diagnosis and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain disciplined version control, unit testing, and documentation to support regulatory evaluation and formal testing efforts.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15% of the time.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years in commercial software development for medical devices, with IEC 62304 experience; surgical navigation exposure is a plus.
  • Proficiency in C++ development on Linux; Qt experience is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with image processing and rendering toolkits such as VTK, ITK, and OpenCV.
  • Experience with 3D volumetric imaging (CT, CBCT, MRI) and medical image formats (DICOM).
  • Background in Agile software development methods and tools like Git, Azure DevOps, and Jira.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Experience participating in design decisions and tradeoffs for evolving codebases, including framework and language choices and architectural considerations.
  • Familiarity with 3D geometry relevant to spatial navigation systems is a plus.
  • Education: BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
