Senior Staff Data Engineer - Platform Data and Analytics
Job Description
Faire is seeking a Senior Staff Data Engineer to define the technology strategy for Platform Data and Analytics and to lead cross team data platforms that accelerate data driven insights. This hybrid role based in San Francisco, CA, involves guiding the data infrastructure and analytics environment to support the company’s growth and product initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute scalable technology initiatives aligned with Faire's growth; lead architecture development with emphasis on data integrity, security, performance, scale, reliability, and robust monitoring and alerting.
- Collaborate on team planning and prioritization, balancing urgent near term needs with long term objectives.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship on complex, open ended problems, covering cost efficient compute and storage, ETL and ELT pipelines, data ingest and warehousing, monitoring, alerting, workload cost tracking, and governance for foundational assets, data security, and privacy.
Qualifications
- Experience designing, developing, and operating data streaming, batch, ETL/ELT, orchestration, storage, compute, and workflow systems at scale.
- Proven ability to define architecture patterns and build reliable, scalable data pipelines, data movement orchestration, querying, transformation, and analytics engineering workflow frameworks.
- Strong SQL and Python capabilities.
- Data warehousing experience at petabyte scale.
- Snowflake, Airflow, and Spark experience is highly valuable.
- Understanding of performance, capacity, and cost trade-offs in data processing and the ability to guide technical and product teams accordingly.
- Experience diagnosing, mitigating, and addressing production data system issues at scale, with patterns for workload performance and cost optimization.
- Experience in a growth stage company with a multi team data function and over 60 people, enabling teams to operate in a self-serve model.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and influencing skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
- Selected technologies we use and teach: AWS, Snowflake, Airflow, Spark, Python, Kotlin.

Salary Range
Location: San Francisco, CA. The pay range for this role is 268,000 to 368,500 USD per year. The position is eligible for equity and comprehensive benefits.

Faire's Engineering organization builds the software powering the marketplace. The Platform group supports the wider organization, enabling product engineering, data science, product management, strategy, analytics, and finance to operate without infrastructure concerns. The platform team emphasizes strong engineering practices, excellent developer experience, security, and reliability, with a focus on enabling rapid, high quality delivery.
This role targets a highly experienced technical leader in the data space whose influence spans multiple Platform and Product groups. The Data Infrastructure team within the Platform group delivers a secure, reliable, cost efficient data platform for ingestion, storage, compute, orchestration, and governance, while the Analytics Platform team builds scalable data warehousing capabilities and foundational assets to accelerate data driven analytics. The role will influence and interact with all data and analytics functions at Faire, including product analytics engineering, data science, strategy and analytics, and finance, balancing leadership with active technical contribution.
Responsibilities include defining technology strategy, roadmaps, architecture patterns, and practical guidance across multiple teams. The role seeks a blend of strategic leadership and hands on development to advance Faire’s data and analytics capabilities.
