Job Description

Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP is seeking a Senior Transit Facility Design Engineer for our Transit Group in the Baltimore, MD office (onsite). This role supports a maintenance facility consultant team by assessing client operating needs and translating them into practical bus and rail vehicle maintenance equipment recommendations, facility layouts, and construction-ready deliverables.

You will also contribute as a technical resource across planning, design, construction, and related project phases, with opportunities to provide high-level reports and presentations. Work includes coordinating equipment and utility requirements for both new and renovated facilities, helping projects stay aligned to scope, budget, and schedule.

What you’ll do

  • Manage delivery of transit facility design services on-time, within budget, and to client satisfaction.
  • Analyze operational processes and related information to improve operational efficiency.
  • Review client building program areas to determine facility space needs.
  • Develop equipment layouts in collaboration with management and user personnel.
  • Design facility and equipment layouts and coordinate vehicle service equipment requirements.
  • Coordinate rolling stock equipment needs with the building design team.
  • Prepare construction drawings and vehicle service equipment bid specifications.
  • Review equipment submittals during construction.
  • Apply subject matter expertise across planning, design, construction, value engineering, cost estimating, risk assessment, and/or scheduling.
  • Provide expert opinions, prepare high-level reports, and deliver presentations.
  • Support client relations and project management efforts in the region.
  • Participate in project scoping, fee estimating, proposal preparation, interviews, and negotiations.
  • Determine work requirements and develop integrated design schedules and budgets, and manage project execution and controls to ensure delivery within scope, budget, and schedule.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structure, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
  • 16+ years of progressive experience in planning, design, management, and implementation of rail and transit related projects.
  • Relevant experience in rail and bus facility design and construction, with emphasis on rail facilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership across large-scale projects from planning through alternatives analysis, environmental process, permitting, final design, construction, safety certification, and commissioning.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation in Maryland; licensing in DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia is a plus.
  • PMP certification preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of transit vehicle-related operations, processes, and standards.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Documentation and organization skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and TEAMS.
  • Ability to use PDF review software (Adobe / Bluebeam).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or BIM (Microstation knowledge is a plus).
  • Ability to travel to project sites, company offices, and client meetings.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work cooperatively with others.

Expected compensation range: $100,000.00 - $180,000.00 annually.
