Job Description

Sargent & Lundy’s grid practice in Austin, Texas is seeking a Senior Transmission Line Engineer 2 to shape high voltage projects from 69 kV up to 500 kV. This role blends hands-on line design with team leadership, spanning cost estimation, design criteria, routing and siting, and ongoing client and vendor engagement, all within a hybrid office and remote schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Design transmission lines in the 69kV to 500kV range.
  • Conduct cost analyses and develop design criteria, routing and siting for transmission lines.
  • Perform conductor selection studies, shielding, grounding and induction analyses.
  • Collaborate with vendors and clients to specify transmission line components.
  • Direct a small project team and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Interact with a diverse client base and coordinate with project teams.
  • Occasional travel for site visits and client meetings.
  • Develop proposals and cost estimates for new work.
  • Lead others in moving engineering problems from issue to solution by leveraging data and modern tools, including automation and AI, to improve workflows and deliver cost effective designs.
  • Direct automation and process-improvement initiatives, such as automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, or generating design documentation, while ensuring outputs are checked.
  • Oversee engineers who program or script (eg, Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
  • Pursue additional learning, such as relevant certificates or studies in computer science or AI to improve oversight of automation-enabled workflows.

Requirements

  • Degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD software to review transmission line models.
  • 7 or more years of project team experience in observing schedules and budgets on diverse transmission assignments, including line design with code compliance, cost estimating, scheduling, procurement specifications, and liaison with construction and installation.
  • Ability to verify right of way requirements, conductor sag and tension calculations, and construction documents.
  • Knowledge of design techniques and tools for producing technical plans, drawings, and models.
  • Experience writing and supporting engineering calculations.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NESC, IEC, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail.

Description

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement in which you will spend three days per week in the office, with two days available for remote work.

Valued but not required skills and experience

  • Have a current PE license or the ability to obtain one within one year.
  • Experience developing engineering proposals and cost estimates.
  • Experience with scheduling.
  • Proficiency with any of the following programs: PLS-TOWER, SAG10, LPILE, MFAD, ArcGIS, CDEGS, AutoCAD, MicroStation.

Compensation

  • Compensation Range: $100,019 - $152,807
