Software Engineer/Developer IV

What you’ll do

• Research and implement new development tools and the supporting infrastructure.
• Research and develop approaches to automate and improve development and release processes.
• Design data structures and develop system performance strategies.
• Lead application development, integration upgrades, and maintenance projects.
• Perform systems analysis, interpret system requirements, and develop detailed system design specifications for integrations and upgrades.
• Design and develop well integrated applications that meet current needs and support future business requirements.
• Determine testing methodologies and manage comprehensive test plans, including the development and implementation of test approaches.
• Use expertise to resolve complex technical design and system integration issues, including determining technical approaches.
• Review system requirements, design, and business processes to ensure alignment with IT and business strategies.
• Consult with clients on project status, proposals, and technical issues.
• Provide support to WSLH Labs to find solutions for testing, reporting, research, and other needs.
• Ensure systems are safe and secure against cybersecurity threats by reviewing for weaknesses and taking corrective actions.
• Provide technical guidance to lower level staff; may supervise unit staff and resolve routine personnel issues.
• Lead teams in development efforts and partner with staff from business, technical, and vendor areas.

How you’ll work

This position works under the general direction of the Director of Dev/Ops. Typical duties include documenting systems design, working with laboratory analysts to build solutions (including cloud-based) for research and workflows, maintaining and resolving problems in existing programs, and creating new web and computer applications. You will also develop data interfaces and APIs with internal and external systems, customers, and agencies.

You will work with the Development Team to implement strategies and tools for automated testing, source code management, and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) to maintain quality and keep custom software current. Initial training is 100% on-site, and hybrid remote work options may be granted at manager discretion after successful completion of training.

Requirements

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience developing applications using Java and IDEs such as Eclipse (or equivalent).
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Oracle and SQL Server databases, including advanced SQL skills and database design.
• Experience with DevOps, including implementation and use of CI/CD pipelines, automated builds, deployments, and testing.
• Experience with web application development, including secure development practices and prevention or mitigation of common cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities.
• Experience with software quality assurance and testing, including developing test plans, test cases, and automated or manual test scripts.
• Demonstrated technical leadership through mentoring, architecture and code reviews, stakeholder influence, and delivery of customer-focused business outcomes.

Compensation and logistics

• Salary: USD 100,000 per year (minimum). Final pay is based on experience and qualifications.
• Location: Madison, WI (hybrid).
• Work arrangement: Training is 100% on-site; hybrid remote work may be granted at manager discretion.
