Substation Engineer (Entry, Staff, Senior or Principal)
Job Description
Xcel Energy seeks a Substation Engineer in its Transmission Asset Management group for the Texas and New Mexico region. Based in Amarillo, TX, this hybrid role requires three days in the office and two days remote. The entry level supports evaluating aging substation infrastructure, developing renewal, refurbishment, and replacement projects, with opportunities to advance to staff, senior, or principal levels. The position emphasizes prioritizing substation needs and coordinating project development from initiation through to design and management transfer.
Responsibilities
- Applies technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to assignments of limited scope.
- Supports the creation of technical documentation, including designs, testing, calculations, reports, and standards; may assist with procedures development.
- Provides ongoing technical support for project activities across Operations, Maintenance, Testing/Diagnostics, and Regulatory domains; may oversee field activities such as commissioning and inspections under direct supervision.
- Coordinates or leads projects or portions of projects, including research, design, equipment selection, procurement support, installation, and commissioning, under the direction of a higher level engineer or supervisor.
- Assists in bid/evaluation processes by performing basic analyses and calculations to support bid documents; communicates with other company areas as required by processes.
- Effectively exchanges information in diverse formats with internal teams and external customers/vendors on matters of varying importance and complexity.
- May coordinate interns, drafters, and technicians, providing guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers; commits to ongoing self development of technical skills and competencies.
- May participate in budgeting, estimating, forecasting, accounting, and work order management to support engineering projects.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program; electrical engineering degree preferred.
- 0+ years of relevant engineering experience; able to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this level as defined by the organization.
- Preferred: Engineer in Training / Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT/FE).

Compensation and Levels
The role encompasses four engineering levels with corresponding salary ranges and minimum requirements:
- Entry Engineer Level — USD 70,000 to 88,667 per year. Minimum: ABET-accredited engineering degree; electrical engineering degree preferred; 0+ years of relevant experience; EIT/FE preferred.
- Staff Engineer Level — USD 81,000 to 106,267 per year. Minimum: ABET-accredited engineering degree; electrical engineering degree preferred; 2+ years of relevant experience; EIT/FE strongly preferred.
- Senior Engineer Level — USD 97,000 to 129,267 per year. Minimum: ABET-accredited engineering degree; electrical engineering degree preferred; 5+ years of relevant experience with EIT/FE required; 7+ years without EIT/FE; PE registration may be required depending on business need.
- Principal Engineer — USD 112,300 to 156,600 per year. Minimum: ABET-accredited engineering degree; civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering degree preferred; 9+ years of relevant experience with PE registration required; 15+ years without PE.
