Systems Engineer
Job Description
This full-time, onsite Systems Engineer position based in Indianapolis, IN supports all branches of Fairchild Communication Systems. The role centers on planning, estimating, and delivering engineering support for low-voltage systems, including structured cabling, intrusion detection, access control, intercom, audiovisual, and video surveillance. A strong technical background in interpreting specifications and bid documents is essential.
Position Summary
A detail-oriented professional responsible for planning, estimating, and engineering support across low-voltage systems such as structured cabling, intrusion detection, access control, intercom, AV, and video surveillance. The ideal candidate can interpret specifications and bid documents accurately while supporting multiple areas of the organization.
Engineering Responsibilities
- Develop system designs aligned with client requirements, applicable standards, and best practices.
- Produce and review CAD drawings, signal flow diagrams, and related technical documentation.
- Select appropriate equipment for each project based on project needs and constraints.
- Collaborate with manufacturers and distributors to stay current on technology trends and product availability.
- Support handoff to project management and assist during project execution phases.
- Ensure designs comply with industry standards (AVIXA, NEC, ADA, OSHA) and local codes.
- Prepare system submittals, as-built documentation, and technical reports.
Estimating Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed project cost estimates, including materials, labor, subcontractors, and contingency costs.
- Develop competitive and accurate proposals with clear scope of work and pricing breakdowns.
- Obtain pricing from vendors and negotiate costs to optimize project budgets.
- Clearly define project scope, deliverables, and exclusions to prevent cost overruns.
- Identify potential risks that may impact costs and timelines.
- Propose value engineering options that maintain functionality while reducing costs.
- Collaborate with sales, project managers, and engineers to ensure estimates reflect project feasibility.
- Track historical cost data to improve budgeting accuracy for future projects.
- Attend site visits, pre-bid meetings, and client consultations as needed.
Requirements
- Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent work-related experience.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in low-voltage systems (voice/data, security, fire alarm, AV, etc.).
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural and electrical drawings.
- Familiarity with industry standards and codes (NEC, NFPA, BICSI, etc.).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and projects under tight deadlines.
- Experience with estimating and design software such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD, or similar is preferred.
