Transmission Engineer - Station

Transmission Engineer - Station supports American Municipal Power (AMPT) by implementing transmission engineering standards and directing technical work for electric switching stations and substations across distribution and transmission voltage levels.

Responsibilities

• Assist with implementing and maintaining AMP Transmission (AMPT) engineering standards.
• Provide technical direction and guidance for AMPT-owned assets and potential new projects during planning and construction.
• Develop detailed project scope and statement of work to support the AMPT construction RFP process.
• Support, assist, and/or develop design work including calculations, studies, and analyses for switching stations and substations for both distribution and transmission voltage levels.
• Participate in capital project engineering activities, including:
  • Developing requests for proposals
  • Vetting, selecting, and managing third-party engineering companies, vendors, and contractors
• Review and recommend detailed engineering bid packages for release approval.
• In collaboration with transmission operations, transmission planning, and transmission project management, develop, maintain, and manage AMPT engineering standards.
• Assist in developing ratings and guidelines for electric equipment to support proper operation and compliance with applicable regulations.
• Support ongoing technical direction for AMPT-owned assets and potential future projects.
• Assist with annual budget development and regular budget updates; maintain contract records.
• Develop and maintain a drawing management file system and engineering databases.
• Coordinate and collaborate with AMPT functions, Members, and other stakeholders.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Four-year accredited degree in engineering required; civil or electrical engineering preferred.
• Minimum 1-3 years experience in electric transmission engineering or distribution engineering preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Preferred knowledge and experience in:
  • Transmission protection and control engineering and/or transmission line engineering
  • FERC Uniform System of Accounts (Part 35 of 18.1 CFR)
  • RTO transmission planning processes and system operations
  • NERC processes and compliance obligations
  • Project management and transmission planning software
• Must be deadline and critical path oriented with strong prioritization ability.
• Experience with computer aided design and graphical information system software preferred, plus Aspen or similar applications.
• Demonstrated expertise using tools that produce spreadsheets, written reports, database reports, and graphical presentations (e.g., Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint).
• Strong verbal, written, and computer skills; must demonstrate success building effective business relationships.
• Must successfully complete FERC Standards of Conduct compliance training within 30 days of employment.
• Willingness to travel to project work sites and/or Columbus headquarters.
