Transportation Engineer

The Transportation Engineer position supports hydraulics and hydrology design for highway and bridge drainage projects within the Arizona Department of Transportation, delivering technical leadership and design reviews. Based in Phoenix, AZ with a remote work option, this role offers a salary of USD 90,200 per year and requires a BS in Civil Engineering or a closely related field and at least two years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead and/or supervise the development and documentation of roadway and bridge hydraulic and hydrologic designs, calculations and modeling, covering culverts, curb and gutter, down drains, spillways, channels, crown ditches, storm drains, bank stabilization, scour protection, and other erosion control measures.
• Review and approve drainage documentation including drainage reports and memos, roadway design plans, bridge hydraulic reports, special provisions, and cost estimates, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and compliance with applicable guidelines, standards, policies and procedures.
• Assess drainage impacts of encroachment permits and proposed lease or sale of ADOT managed land; provide recommendations or comments to ensure adherence to drainage design guidelines and procedures.
• Represent the Section, Group and ADOT at committees, workshops, project status meetings, comment resolution meetings, and other gatherings with ADOT units, agencies, consultants, contractors, attorneys, and the public.
• Communicate with ADOT staff and external agencies (FHWA, FEMA, EPA, Counties, etc.) through meetings and reports to ensure timely and coordinated responses.
• Participate in planning and project scoping for road and bridge projects, applying drainage design expertise to analyze needs and propose design alternatives, including erosion control measures, scour ratings, countermeasures and Plans of Action that meet project objectives.
• Organize and participate in field review meetings to better understand and resolve project related needs and issues.
• Contribute to ongoing training, research, seminars and workshops to enhance technical abilities of self and team, including developing standard work documents (typically 5 to 10 percent).
• Provide expert witness testimony in drainage related litigation on behalf of the state.

Requirements

• Minimum 2 to 5 years of demonstrated bridge and drainage hydraulics design and analysis, including team leadership responsibilities.
• A valid Arizona Professional Engineer (PE) license is required. Candidates with an active PE in another state must meet registration requirements set by the Arizona Technical Board of Registration and obtain an Arizona PE within 6 months of employment start date.
• Current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license; ability to drive on state business; must pass driving record checks and maintain an acceptable driving record.
• BS in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
• Must successfully complete E-Verify.
