Utility Engineer
Job Description
The Utility Engineer position based in Fairbanks, Alaska focuses on planning, design, and construction administration for water and wastewater projects, with additional support provided to Operations. The role also manages utility asset programs for plant and piping under the VP of Engineering, with an approximate 50 percent split between engineering/construction support and asset management duties.
Overview
This role, with Nexus Water Group in Fairbanks, requires delivering engineering expertise across project lifecycle while contributing to asset management programs for water and wastewater facilities. The incumbent will collaborate with Operations and maintain safety and quality standards throughout project execution and asset stewardship.
Responsibilities
- Provide timely engineering support to internal and external customers.
- Support the utility asset management program.
- Ensure safe work practices at all times.
- Project management including evaluation of design, workmanship, and cost control.
- Prepare engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Select and specify materials and equipment for projects.
- Plan for and review updates to construction standards.
- Basic engineering analysis of piping and hydraulic systems, and water/wastewater treatment processes.
- Conduct field inspections and troubleshoot construction project issues on site.
- Respond to requests for technical assistance from operations.
- Support administration of the CMMS including asset additions and related tasks, system improvements and optimizations, PM generation and reporting.
- Maintain the Capital Equipment/Asset Repair & Replacement database.
- Support internal GIS database updates and maintenance.
Requirements
- Minimum of two years of field and office experience in a water and wastewater utility or other industrial environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering.
- Valid Alaska Driver's License.
- Strong commitment to safety.
- Solid understanding of fundamental engineering principles and techniques.
- Result-focused, detail-oriented, customer-centric and self-motivated.
- Good verbal and written communication skills; ability to convey technical information succinctly and accurately.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with the public in a tactful, courteous manner.
- Experience in design and completion of projects and demonstrated engineering judgment.
- Ability to read and understand engineering plans and specifications.
- Ability to prepare engineering plans, specifications, and reports.
- Required computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Outlook, and the ability to learn other software used for internal processes.
- Ability to learn to use GIS applications and data.
- Preferred program experience: Autodesk suite, Bentley WaterGEMS.

Work Location and Schedule
The Utility Engineer will be based in Fairbanks, AK. The schedule is Monday through Friday, with after-hours and weekend on-call support may be required.
Work Environment
Approximately 50 percent of work time is in office settings, with the remainder in the field at plants and outdoor environments. Field conditions may include loud noise, wastewater odors, chemical hazards, confined spaces, electrical hazards, and hazards typical of active construction sites. Occasional extreme cold or hot conditions may be encountered. Physical duties may include lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, walking, and prolonged sitting, with occasional climbing, pulling, kneeling, twisting, turning, stooping, reaching, and bending. Personal protective equipment must be worn, and safety practices followed as directed by the site supervisor.
