Water/Wastewater Engineer - Design/Build Lead

The Water/Wastewater Engineer - Design/Build Lead is a senior-level role based onsite in Charlotte, North Carolina. This position leads the design-build delivery of municipal water and wastewater infrastructure throughout North Carolina, combining strong technical leadership with direct client-facing responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead the full design lifecycle for water and wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, pipelines, and related infrastructure within a Design-Build or progressive Design-Build framework.
• Manage scope, schedule, budget, QA/QC processes, and risk assessments while maintaining robust relationships with contractors, subconsultants, and municipal partners.
• Provide advanced engineering analysis, modeling, design documentation, and technical decision-making for process, hydraulic, structural, and site components.
• Mentor junior engineers, coordinate multidisciplinary design teams, and ensure alignment between engineering and construction activities.
• Engage with municipal utilities, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders throughout planning, permitting, design, and delivery stages.
• Contribute to technical sections of proposals, assist in developing design concepts, participate in interviews, and help shape Design-Build strategies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering (or related field). Master’s degree preferred.
• 6+ years of experience in water/wastewater engineering, including treatment process design, advanced treatment technologies, and utility master planning.
• Working knowledge of North Carolina DEQ regulations and permitting requirements.
• Experience collaborating directly with contractors in a design-build environment.
• Demonstrated experience with Design-Build or progressive Design-Build delivery methods.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina or ability to obtain within six months preferred.
• Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage client relationships.
• PMP certification or training in project management methodologies preferred.
