General Atomics, via GA-EMS Systems Engineering, invites you to join a hybrid role in San Diego as an ALRE Project Engineer. The position carries a salary range of USD 98,100 to 171,398 per year and centers on supporting the U S Navy Ford-class ALRE programs. You will assess baseline changes, prepare Engineering Change Proposals, transition ECPs from development to deployment, and assist with fleet troubleshooting within a collaborative engineering culture.

Responsibilities

  • Document findings and communicate results to engineering teams, the program office, and customers; deliver technical briefings and may act as the primary technical liaison on projects.
  • Provide direction to design and technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professionals.
  • Conduct technical analyses using systems engineering methods to develop, fabricate, test, and integrate GA-EMS systems, whether new or existing.
  • Coordinate and interface with customers, contractors, and internal engineering groups assigned to projects.
  • Support the development of program plans, cost estimates, and project schedules.
  • Generate systems engineering labor hours, materials, and travel estimates for proposal input.
  • Develop innovative yet practical solutions to advanced technical problems in engineering.
  • Serve as the focal point for technical communication within the company and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact to customers or government regulatory bodies.
  • Present reports at engineering meetings, participate in program reviews, and provide guidance on technical issues.
  • Offer expert guidance to colleagues tackling difficult engineering challenges.
  • Forecast future engineering requirements and the modifications needed to reach technical goals.
  • Collaborate on complex issues that require novel and creative approaches.
  • May assume technical and engineering responsibility for project success.
  • Plan, coordinate, contribute to, or author engineering documentation, including reporting, releasing, and presenting technical content.
  • Develop technical materials and present them at customer design reviews.
  • Apply Earned Value Management System principles and work with design leads to establish estimates to complete work and assess impacts to baseline cost and schedule.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to laws, regulations, and safety procedures in all business activities.
  • Plan future applications of solutions based on new engineering developments.
  • Participate in or lead the development of new business opportunities or the expansion of existing ones.

Requirements

  • Education and experience: typically a bachelor, master, or PhD in engineering or related technical discipline from an accredited institution, with progressive engineering experience as follows — six or more years with a bachelor’s degree, four or more years with a master’s degree, or two or more years with a PhD. An equivalent combination of experience may substitute for education.
  • Extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, with the ability to understand overall system architectures and CONOPS.
  • Strong organizational, planning, scheduling, and coordination skills to meet milestones, plus the ability to quickly grasp new concepts and apply them in evolving environments; capable of selecting appropriate approaches at task or project level to solve complex problems.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills for cross‑department collaboration and for acting as a prime technical contact; customer-focused and able to guide less experienced professionals. Capable of working independently and in teams.
  • Willingness to work extended hours occasionally to support design reviews, milestones, or surge needs.
  • Travel within the United States estimated up to 10 percent of annual hours.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance is required.

  • Familiarity with the government Engineering Change Proposal DD 1692 form and its completion criteria.
