Job Description

The Analytics Engineer role at DEXTER TECHNOLOGIES INC is a hybrid position in Houston, TX that connects data engineering practices with Power BI business intelligence. You will build and optimize Azure SQL data warehouse models, support scheduled refresh workflows, and collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure reporting logic is accurate and maintainable.

Location and Work Setup

  • Houston, TX (hybrid)
  • Flexible work from home options available

Role Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain SQL views, staging tables, and fact/dimension models in an Azure SQL data warehouse, including deduplication and business-rule logic such as status-based routing and multi-source reconciliation.
  • Build and maintain Power BI semantic model relationships, DAX measures, security roles, and the reports and dashboards delivered to business stakeholders and used for company-wide reporting.
  • Share responsibility with the Sr. Manager, Data & Analytics for monitoring scheduled Azure Data Factory pipelines and Power BI dataset refreshes.
  • Respond to failures and perform basic troubleshooting when pipelines or refresh jobs do not complete successfully.
  • Make minor modifications to existing pipelines to accommodate new or changing business requirements as tooling familiarity increases.
  • Partner with business SMEs to translate reporting requests and business logic (including commission structures, revenue recognition, and inventory rules) into accurate and well-documented data models.
  • Write and maintain documentation for data models, metric definitions, and report logic to clarify data lineage and ownership beyond any single individual.
  • Follow and help evolve team standards for naming conventions, DAX style, and semantic model design as team practices mature.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements, optimize current data workflows, and incorporate new technologies or tools to strengthen analytics capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years in a data-focused role (analytics engineer, BI developer, data analyst, or similar) with hands-on SQL experience, comfortable working with CTEs, window functions, and reading and writing complex multi-source views.
  • Solid Power BI experience including building semantic models from scratch and writing DAX using CALCULATE, filter context, and context transition, rather than only basic aggregations.
  • Dimensional modeling fundamentals, including star schemas and slowly changing dimensions.
  • A demonstrated ability to work directly with business stakeholders to translate ambiguous requirements or business rules into a working data model.
  • Strong attention to detail, including verifying joins and understanding how issues such as inclusive date boundaries can affect report correctness.
