Applied AI Engineer

Booz Allen Hamilton is seeking an Applied AI Engineer for a national security environment in Fort Belvoir, VA. This role focuses on defining and delivering critical machine learning solutions through the end-to-end lifecycle, from model training and testing to deployment and ongoing maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

• Train, test, deploy, and maintain machine learning models that learn from data
• Own and define the direction of critical solutions by applying best-fit machine learning algorithms and technologies
• Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, solutions architects, and MLOps engineers to deliver enterprise-scale solutions, including large-scale processing of data and information
• Support customer-focused outcomes by applying statistical analyses on business processes using machine learning techniques
• Guide clients through AI and ML algorithms, tools, and frameworks
• Work with Mission Integration teams and product stakeholders to translate mission needs into refined, business-facing AI capabilities
• Address real-world challenges and contribute to AI strategy for national security customers

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in software engineering, applied AI and ML, or full-stack development
• Experience rapidly prototyping, developing, and iterating on use-case-specific AI solutions, including chat systems, user-facing applications, and domain-specific copilots
• Ability to work closely with Mission Integration teams and product stakeholders to translate mission needs into refined, business-facing AI capabilities
• Ability to pivot quickly between domains and use cases, adapting AI solutions to varied operational requirements
• Top Secret clearance

Nice If You Have

• Experience with human-in-the-loop (HITL) evaluation, AI red teaming, or assessing conversational interfaces for safety and hallucination mitigation
• Experience with front-end development technologies such as React or TypeScript for end-to-end user-facing delivery
• Experience deploying and managing analytical dashboards or mechanisms to track user interactions and model performance
• Experience with UX best practices tailored to conversational AI and generative interfaces
• Experience conducting evaluation and tuning of AI outputs, including refining prompts, optimizing retrieval logic, and implementing custom heuristics
• Experience with Python and building API endpoints such as FastAPI or Flask, or rapid UI frameworks such as Streamlit or Gradio to demonstrate AI capabilities
• Security+ Certification

Security and Clearance Information

Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Top Secret clearance is required.

Compensation

• Projected salary range: $77,600 to $176,000 (annualized USD)
• Booz Allen compensation is determined by factors including location, education, knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, and contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements

Work Model

• Onsite: Work will primarily be performed full-time at a customer facility, where employees will collaborate directly with colleagues and customers as required by the role
