Job Description

Westfall Technik seeks an Automation Engineer / Senior Technician to own automation system delivery from design through installation, validation, and ongoing support.

Responsibilities

  • Design automated machinery and components using 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred; PTC Creo and AutoCAD are a plus)
  • Interpret mechanical prints, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams
  • Specify and source components, manage BOMs, and coordinate with vendors to support feasibility and cost efficiency
  • Create and maintain technical documentation such as setup sheets, process documentation, and operation manuals
  • Estimate costs and timelines for new automation programs and participate in review and approval meetings
  • Assemble, wire, and plumb mechanical and electrical systems according to engineering designs and schematics
  • Use hand tools, shop tools, and fabrication equipment to modify or build parts as required
  • Perform preliminary testing including leak testing, power-up tests, sensor verification, and safety checks
  • Redline prints and share feedback to engineering to improve manufacturability and assembly
  • Support software and hardware integration and assist with final programming stages
  • Participate in validation and acceptance testing: IAT, FAT, SAT
  • Install systems on the production floor and establish initial process settings and control parameters
  • Maintain deployed automation systems, troubleshoot issues, and propose long-term fixes for recurring problems
  • Train technicians and operators on system operation and maintenance
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including Production, Quality, and Maintenance
  • Coordinate new product sample builds and review them for manufacturability
  • Track project schedules and milestones, proactively manage delays, and manage resource needs
  • Support efforts to keep automation program expenses within budget
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime, enhance productivity, and improve system safety
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace following internal and OSHA safety procedures
  • Suggest design improvements based on build and test observations
  • Take on additional duties as needed to support team priorities

Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field (preferred)
  • 3-5 years of combined experience in automation design, assembly, machine building, and testing
  • Manufacturing experience with both design and hands-on fabrication required
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks; working knowledge of PTC Creo and AutoCAD is advantageous
  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Familiarity with PLCs, sensors, pneumatics, control panels, and industrial automation systems
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with shop tool and assembly technique proficiency
  • Basic computer literacy including Microsoft Office and basic CAD operations
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with shifting priorities and minimal supervision
  • Effective communication skills for cross-functional coordination
  • Self-motivated, proactive approach with commitment to continuous improvement

Work Environment

  • Usually office setting within a manufacturing facility; low to moderate noise level
  • Ability to work with others one-on-one, and communicate remotely via video and phone
  • Ability to work independently
