Bridge Preservation Engineer - Bridge Division

Join the Texas Department of Transportation in the Bridge Division to lead statewide preservation efforts, advance instrumentation and non destructive evaluation, and oversee bridge assessments and coatings inspections. Position Details

• Location: 6230 East Stassney Lane, Austin, Texas 78744 (onsite)
• Salary ranges: Transportation Engineer II: $69,572 – $103,000 yearly; Transportation Engineer III: $76,530 – $113,300 yearly; Transportation Engineer IV: $84,182 – $124,600 yearly
• Pay Basis: Yearly
• Travel: 25 % of the time
• FLSA Status: Exempt
• Shift: Day Job; 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday
• Location flexibility: Onsite

Responsibilities

• Lead statewide bridge preservation initiatives and develop preservation plans and strategies, including for major and signature bridges.
• Direct TxDOT's bridge instrumentation and Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) programs.
• Conduct condition and damage surveys on existing bridges and manage consultants performing detailed NDE, condition assessments, and coatings inspections.
• Report to the Construction and Maintenance Branch within the Bridge Division and coordinate across districts to advance preservation efforts.
• Plan, organize, and execute statewide preservation work, including developing preservation plans and strategies for key structures.
• Enhance TxDOT's instrumentation and NDE capabilities and participate in related initiatives as a representative or leader.
• Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, standards, and guidelines; maintain liaison with government officials and private entities.
• Operate with a high degree of self supervision and assume accountability for work products; present findings and represent TxDOT when required.
• Perform inspections, structural evaluations, and analyses of bridges and related structures, and develop or review engineering documents, reports, and remediation plans.
• Assess load carrying capacities of bridges and travel statewide as needed to fulfill duties.
• Respond to technical and policy questions related to bridge preservation and maintain bridge inspection data with accompanying analyses.
• Execute moderately complex structural analyses of bridge designs and review literature, technical data, material specifications, and procedures.
• Monitor contract performance, evaluate deliverables, review invoices, and ensure consultant compliance; prepare evaluations of consultant performance.
• Serve as a technical advisor on research projects; lead or participate in contract selection teams and oversee consultant contracts, scopes of work, and schedules.
• Negotiate fees, budgets, scopes of work, and other contract terms; monitor progress and quality of consultants and finalize supplemental agreements as needed.
• Coordinate with districts to lead and manage statewide bridge preservation initiatives.
• Provide leadership in preservation initiatives and contribute to broader program success through collaboration and technical oversight.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science (TX PELS accepted).
• Experience by level: Transportation Engineer II requires 5 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (experience may be full-time or prorated part-time; related graduate education may substitute on a year-for-year basis). Transportation Engineer III requires 6 years; Transportation Engineer IV requires 7 years (substitutions for graduate education apply as above).
• Mandatory Safety Impact Certificate.
• Mandatory Licensed Professional Engineer.
• Professional engineers licensed in another U.S. state must meet Texas Engineering Practices Act license requirements and obtain a Texas PE license within six months of hire, signing an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
