Civil Engineer, SpaceXAI Battery Storage

SpaceXSI is seeking a Civil Engineer for the Battery Storage team within the High Power Engineering group. This onsite role is based in Memphis, TN and focuses on owning civil and site design for a battery storage plant, producing construction documentation, and supporting delivery through construction and operations.

Responsibilities

• Own civil and site design for the battery storage plant including pads, foundations, grading, drainage, access roads, fire lanes, and equipment yards, coordinated with electrical collection and NFPA 855 spacing.
• Support the fire and life-safety case with civil provisions such as water supply, hydrant layout, deflagration venting clearances, and emergency vehicle access for AHJ review.
• Coordinate seismic and severe-weather (tornado/high-wind) structural design basis for storage blocks, transformers, and equipment supports in collaboration with structural engineering.
• Produce issued-for-construction civil packages, including site plans, sections, details, and specifications, with bid support as needed.
• Resolve field RFIs, submittals, and installation quality issues during construction of the storage yard.
• Coordinate underground electrical duct bank civil interfaces, oil containment, and grounding grid work with Design and Ops/Build engineering teams.
• Maintain as-built civil records for the storage plant.

About the Role

As part of the High Power Engineering team, the Civil Engineer will help design, build, operate, and maintain electrical infrastructure for AI training campuses. The position is based in Memphis, TN, with potential travel to other sites, and includes collaboration with a small on-site team to scale high-capacity power systems on a compute-demand schedule.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or another engineering discipline.
• 3+ years of civil or structural design experience on industrial, energy, or data center sites.
• Professional Engineering license, or intention to actively pursue a PE license.
• NFPA 855 or energy-storage site civil experience.
• Experience with seismic qualification and severe-weather hardening of outdoor electrical equipment.
• AutoCAD Civil 3D or equivalent site-design software experience.
• Experience coordinating civil packages with medium-voltage collection and fire-protection design.
• Experience defending a design to an authority having jurisdiction.

Additional Requirements

• Perform hands-on work in heat, cold, rain, and in tight quarters or at heights.
• Be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed to support construction, energization, and operations.
• Remain focused in hazardous environments while wearing appropriate PPE.
• Lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted.
• Provide 24/7 on-call support for emergencies.
• Work onsite in Memphis, TN (no remote or hybrid arrangement).
• Travel up to 25% for factory witness testing, vendor and OEM engagement, and supporting other sites.
• Valid driver’s license.
